Shahan Araradian
says who? the point is that it has already been done... the standard ea is already a well built new language which perfectly serves its purpose as a standardized language, constantly expending and adjusting to new needs of new times... why throw stones at it and try to "correct" it (which is a fallacy as i mentioned before) overnight when some 3 million people use it today with no problem whatsoever... You apparently don't understand its serious flaws and the way it has destroyed particular sounds like /ʏ/. Your argument that it "adjusted to the needs of the times" is baseless, unless if you mean to educate agragrian villagers to learn the language in two days. But I think we don't need to water down our orthography to the lowest common denominator. I think we can spend 2 months to learn the language, and traditional orthography is even simpler than English, with its extremely strange spelling (which nevertheless has become the language of the world). It's NOT the eastern Armenian langauge that has been standardized! Armenians in Iran (Eastern Armenian speakers) still use traditional Armenian orthography. Don't mix Western and Eastern Armenian dialects with traditional orthography and Soviet/reformed orthography. They are two different beasts. Էլիա
This is not entirely true. There were no ejective consonants in classical Armenian. In Eastern Armenian, they were borrowed from Trans-Caucasian languages. (examples are պ (/p'/) and կ (/k'/)). Shahan Araradian
...and those other idiots who insist that Բ//Ben sounds Փ/Pyur nd Դ/Da sounds Tho/ Թ, and .Չ/CH sounds like J/Ջ.... Only if we can figure out what we will do with the ejective sounds in Eastern Armenian (i.e. how we will get rid of them). (That is, the same line of reasoning can be used for Eastern Armenian here. If Դ was really pronounced /d/ in classical Armenian -- which I don't dispute -- and Թ was pronounced /tʰ/ (aspirated/th/UNKNOWN in Classical Armenian) -- but if Տ was prounouced /t/ in Classical Armenian and in Eastern Armenian it is pronounced /t'/ -- EJECTIVE -- then I have a problem with your claim of standardizing Armenian phonology based on Eastern Armenian phonology. We can *never* come to a conclusion unless we do academic research on how թ was really pronounced in Classical Armenian... And the same goes with the other aspirated consonants like փ -- perhaps "ph" in Classical Armenian, as in pharoah, which would make ֆ redundant -- and ք and չ and ց.) My point is: neither Western Armenian nor Eastern Armenian PHONOLOGY reflect Classical Armenian PHONOLOGY accurately. (Western Armenian with its sound shifts and merging of sounds; Eastern Armenian with its sound shifts and introduction of ejective consonants in lieu of merging sounds.) More concretely and in order to avoid any ambiguity, here is an example evolution of bilabial plosives across the board (stuff in forward slashes is in IPA): Classical Armenian: բ == /b/ պ == /p/ փ == (DISPUTED): /pʰ/ or /ph/ or something else lost to time... Western Armenian: բ == SOUND SHIFT: /b/ ---- BECOMES ---> /pʰ/ պ == SOUND SHIFT: /p/ ---- BECOMES ----> /b/ փ == MERGE: /pʰ/ or /ph/ or (something else lost to time) ----- BECOMES ----> /pʰ/ Eastern Armenian: բ == STAYS THE SAME: /b/ պ == INTRODUCTION OF NEW SOUND: /p/ ----- BECOMES -----> /p'/ (apostrophe indicates EJECTIVE) փ == (DISPUTED) SOUND SHIFT: /pʰ/ or /ph/ or (something else lost to time) ----- BECOMES ----> /pʰ/ Edited May 1, 2007 by Shahan Araradian

Like I said before and I'll say it again: 1. Are we making fun of you because you speak Armenian strange? (That is you don't use Classical Armenian phonology? Specifically, that you use ejective sounds like /p'/ an /k'/ that never existed in Classical Armenian? No. So have the same common courtesy to accept the evolution of the Western Armenian dialect, as we respect the evolution of the Eastern Armenian dialect.) 2. Are we making fun of you because you use Soviet Armenian orthography? (You even write the Armenian word for "Armenian" (հայերէն) incorrectly, a way which Mashdots wouldn't have written!! -- you write հայերեն in Soviet Orthography.) No, we don't make fun of you, because we understand how Soviet orthography evolved and that there's a reason why you write Armenian in the way that Mashdots wouldn't have written. So we expect the same common courtesy back. 4. There are a number of issues here that you have to deal separately with: 1. Orthography: Traditional vs. Reformed/Soviet 2. Phonology: Western vs. Eastern 3. Morphology: Western vs. Eastern You are ARROGANT because you claim Eastern Armenian to be superior to Western Armenian. And because you also think you know everything, you are IGNORANT. PHONOLOGY & MORPHOLOGY Both Eastern Armenian and Western Armenian have their STANDARD rules of phonology and morphology. One is not better than the other as you claim! They are simply different EVOLUTIONS of Classical Armenian. (There is both "street" Eastern Armenian and "street" Western Armenian. You can't compare "street" Western Armenian to standard Eastern Armenian, as you can't compare "street" Eastern Armenian to standard Western Armenian, as you can't compare apples to oranges.) Regarding phonology: I have already explained above that NEITHER Western Armenian phonology NOR Eastern Armenian phonology are equivalent to Classical Armenian phonology -- both have evolved nearly as much from Classical Armenian phonology and I have given concrete examples above. ORTHOGRAPHY Regarding orthography: we all know what the original orthography was as Mashdots had it... And it wasn't Soviet orthography. In Armenian when a consonant is pronounced and its sound kept in perpetuity, one hears the sound of the letter «ը» = [e"]. This is the definition of a consonant in Armenian and for that reason in the above numerals one sees that hidden [e"] when the compound numbers are syllabified. The syllabified version of the number eleven in Armenian as shown above is «տաս-նը-մեկ» which is the same way the word is pronounced. This pattern will hold true for the rest of the numbers. We will conclude the numbers with the above examples and save the rest for another lesson. Another point to be emphasized is that the figure "8" or «ութ» unlike the figures 7, 8 and 9 does not end with the letter «ը», a common error encountered in conversational as well as written Armenian. vahan79
How do the Greeks deal with their dialects, I wonder? Where is Nikephoros Phokas? I know that the Pontic Greek dialect is much different than the Greek spoken in Greece or Cyprus. Do the Pontic Greeks learn both dialects? I am not sure what you mean. But, let me try to answer. The key difference between Greek and Armenian with respect to dialects is that with Armenian, both Eastern and Western are considered correct. In that way, they are almost treated as their own languages. Yes, they are mutually intelligible (with practice), but so is Spanish and Portuguese. With Greek, there is a standard modern language. All dialects are dialects, and that's it. Pontic Greek, like Tsakonian Greek, is completely different and might be considered its own language. They evolved from the Doric branches, not the Attic branches. In other words, speakers of those must learn modern Greek to communicate with mainlanders. Cypriots speak a variant/dialect of Modern (Attic) Greek, so they are not hard to understand with some practice. In sum, the complicating factor here is that there is not "base" langauge that is considered the "proper" one for Armenian. There is EA and WA, and the sub-dialects of each of those. I know there is resistence to calling them different languages, but we there is some evidence: (1) you need a different book to learn the language because the grammar is that different. (2) no matter what people say, EA speakers cannot understand WA speakers. Try speaking WA to a Yerevantsi who has never heard it before...he/she will not understand you. He will CLAIM to understand you, but really won't. The reason the Diaspora can understand both WA and EA is because we have had exposure to both. As an EA speaker, I hear WA all the time on TV and around town (plus, my mom is WA speaker) Anyway...this post was all chaotic. Sorry.
