Is he blocked for good? Isn't it bad for Armenia that it does not have a U.S. ambassador? What is the next step?

I think its a sick game being played on the part of the US.

they know how much this issue (AG) is important to us...and yet they insist on sending hoagland!

is it some kind of joke? i think it is better to not have any american ambassador then to have hoagland!

Yes but a real one!

hoagland was a cheap stunt just to piss us off...

I agree with ak-47, Evans should have stayed....

The Armenian proactive stance is righteous however we can amplify diplomacy after he takes office as Ambasador. Let him come... Then send hoagland home after he makes a pro Turkish claims not accepting facts about Genocide of the Armenians, Send a message to US we are not amused easily. Armenia considers denial of facts by other Goverments as an insult... who clearly have archives in congress, libaries, media & goverment officials to support it during the preiod in question... Shove the double standard policy where the sun does not shine !

Armenians answer the call !

Amb. Hoagland's nomination is currently blocked by the "hold" placed by Sen. Bob Menendez of NJ.

If he continues that hold, the only way Hoagland can make it to Armenia is via a recess appointment. There have been many opportunities during the past few months for Pres. Bush to make a recess appointment - meaning appointing someone during the congressional recess and thus bypassing the normal confirmation process. Bush has yet to do that and will probably not do it.

The blocking of this nomination demonstrated the strength of the Armenian American community - particularly those in the community that were opposed to this nomination following remarks made during the Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing.

EX-KARABAKH MEDIATOR TO RUN U.S. EMBASSY IN ARMENIA

By Ruben Meloyan

Radio Liberty, Czech Rep.

June 27 2007

The United States has named a new, more high-ranking diplomat to run

its embassy in Yerevan in the continuing absence of a U.S. ambassador

to Armenia, it emerged on Wednesday.

A U.S. embassy official said Rudolf Perina will take over from Anthony

Godfrey, the deputy chief of mission, as U.S. charge d'affaires in

Yerevan next month.

Unlike Godfrey, Perina has the diplomatic rank of ambassador and

has served as U.S. ambassador to former Yugoslavia and Moldova in

the past. He is better known in Armenia as the U.S. co-chair of the

OSCE's Minsk Group on Nagorno-Karabakh from 2001-2004.

"Rudolf Perina will arrive in Armenia on July 10," Tom Mittnacht, head

of the U.S. embassy's public affairs section, told RFE/RL. "He has

the rank of ambassador but is coming to Armenia not as an ambassador

but as a charge d'affaires."

Mittnacht said another senior American diplomat, Richard Hoagland,

remains President George W. Bush's ambassador designate to Armenia.

Hoagland's congressional confirmation continues to be blocked by a

pro-Armenian member of the U.S. Senate over his failure to describe as

genocide the mass killings of Armenians in Ottoman Turkey. Senator

Robert Menendez pledged last April to keep his so-called "hold"

on the ambassadorial appointment.

The last U.S. ambassador to Armenia, John Evans, is believed to have

been recalled by Washington last year for publicly referring to the

1915-1918 slaughter of some 1.5 million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire

as the first genocide of the 20th century. The Bush administration

refuses to use the politically sensitive term with regard to the mass

killings for fear of antagonizing Turkey, a key U.S. ally.

"By appointing Ambassador Perina as charge d'affaires, the State

Department took into account his rich experience and knowledge of

Armenia as well as his personal and business ties with top Armenian

leaders, which will contribute to continuity in our bilateral relations

with Armenia," Mittnacht said.

RUDOLF PERINA'S APPOINTMENT SPEAKS ABOUT GREAT IMPORTANCE OF ARMENIA AND NKR FOR USA

PanARMENIAN.Net

28.06.2007 13:39 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ "Frankly speaking, I do not know the diplomatic

rank of Rudolf Perina. However, he is a really experienced diplomat,

professional conflictologist. R. Perina served as U.S. Special

Envoy on local conflicts in Eurasia, he was closely involved in

the settlement of the Yugoslavian conflict, directly participated

in preparing and signing the Dayton Agreement," political scientist

Levon Melik-Shahnazaryan stated to the PanARMENIAN.Net journalist,

commenting on Rudolf Perina's appointment as U.S. Charge d'Affaires

in Armenia. According to the political scientist, R. Perina is

well aware of problems of Transdnestria, South Ossetia, Abkhazia

and Karabakh. "Most likely, R. Perina's appointment as U.S. Charge

d'Affaires in Armenia is not an evidence for neglecting his knowledge

and values, just the opposite, it speaks about the great importance

that Washington pays to our region, in particular, to Armenia and NKR,"

the Armenian political scientist underscored.

OSCE Minsk Group former U.S. Co-Chair Rudolf Perina is appointed

as U.S. Charge d'Affaires in Armenia. He will take up his duties on

July 10.
