CONTEST ON BEST MONUMENT MODEL SYMBOLIZING SHUSHI LIBERATION ANNOUNCED

The Yerevan city administration has announced an open contest for a monument model symbolizing the liberation of Shushi town (Karabakh) during the war with Azerbaijan. The memorial should symbolize the liberation struggle of the Armenian people in Artsakh. The stuff and height of the monument is up to the authors. The monument will be inaugurated at the crossroad of Freedom Avenue and Babayan street (not far from the city center). The winner of the contest will receive $1500. Those who take the second and the third places will receive $1000 and $300 respectively (in AMD equivalent). Architects, sculptors and artists are eligible for the contest. The appeals should be submitted to the department of architecture and town-building no later than February 15, 2007, reports newsarmenia.ru. The 15th anniversary of liberation of Shushi - one of the cultural, educational and spiritual centers of Armenianhood of the 19th century – is marked in 2007.

Yerevan’s plans to build a monument immortalizing Armenian heroism in the Nagorno Karabkh town of Shushi have caused an uproar of protest in neighboring Azerbaijan.

The liberation of Shushi by the Armenian army (on May 9, 1992) proved a turning point in the Karabakh liberation struggle, as the town was considered to be Azerbaijan’s key military stronghold.

The NKR town to be honored

The fall of Shushi was followed by a series of major victories for the Armenian army over Azerbaijan. Towards the 15th anniversary of Shushi’s liberation Yerevan’s municipality, jointly with the Architects’ Union, announced an open competition for the design and construction of the monument.

“The monument is to symbolize the liberation struggle of the Armenian people in Artsakh (the historic name for Karabakh),” Armen Gevorgyan, of the architecture and urban-development department of the Yerevan Mayor’s Office told ArmeniaNow

However, the construction of the monument, to put it mildly, isn’t after Azerbaijan’s heart.

Head of Azerbaijan’s delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Samed Seidov said in an Associated Press interview that Armenia is doing everything possible to influence negatively the peace negotiating process. Another member of the same delegation, Ganira *****yeva, sent a letter to the PACE, in which she, in particular, said:

“The Armenian side is trying to distort reality and once again mislead the international community. The Armenians are setting up that monument in Yerevan in order to preserve the ‘status quo’ they gained at the point of a bayonet.”

In her letter *****yeva also adds that the Azeri delegation will bring the issue up for discussion at the PACE.

Head of the Department for Press and Information Policy at Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry Tair Taghizade did not remain indifferent to Yerevan’s plans to build such a monument either.

“The Armenian side continues to display an unconstructive approach; though unsuccessfully, it is trying to bring the situation around the Karabakh issue back to the level it was in the 1990s. I don’t know how successful it will be, but I hope that the Armenian leadership will not take to that brashly unconstructive step considering the positively developing peace process,” Taghizade stated.

Armenian officials have refrained from responding to Azerbaijan’s protests.

But officials at the Yerevan municipality assured ArmeniaNow that neither the speculations nor statements of the Azerbaijani side will affect the decision to hold a competition for the monument and realize the project.

Designers have until February 15 to submit ideas for the monument which will stand at the intersection of Azatutyun Avenue and Babayan Street.

Is there anything related to Armenians that would not upset them? These people claim both Artsakh and Zangezur (?!?!) as theirs. Some of them even claim Yerevan.

I think all of Shushi should be repaired, including the mosques.

Just some of them? They had no nation befoe 1918, they were granted something they never had. They actually claim all of Armenia, because this is unsatisfying.

let them claim all they want, who cares? obviously the loser complains. yes shushi shall be rebuilt, not the mosques though, obviously we should not actively destroy them (afterall, we are not religious monument destroyers like they are). but there is no need for us to spend money on preserving them while we are desperately short of money to fix up armenian buildings
