alby Posted January 10, 2007 Report Share Posted January 10, 2007 Hello everyone, I want to send some clothing for the poor in Armenia or karabakh and I don't know if there are any places who take used clothing in good condition for that purpose in Los Angeles area. I did try ARS but they take only brand new clothing. I tried (brountsk) but they have not returned my call so I want to know if anyone knows of any other organization for that purose. As for clothing, the clothing I want to send is in like new condition and they are not cheap stuff. I know I can ship them myself, that's what I do all the time when I ship to relatives but this time I want to know if I can help the needy in Armenia and specially Karabakh and at the same time avoid shipping. Why did I say specially Karabakh? Because they promised so many people who resettled there with help but never kept their promises. So again if there is an organization anyone knows it would be great otherwise I will just send the clothing to my relatives and let them decide what to do. I send my old clothes to my relatives in armenia and then I ask them to give it to needy ones. It works. To send 70 lbs clothes with a box costs $35. But it depends on how much alby can trust the people or organisation he/she is sending the clothing to (or sending money to - if that route is taken). There was a news report around a couple of years ago revealing that clothing that was sent to be donated to the poor was actually ending up being sold in markets. Of course the mafiosi politicians don't like used items being sent to Armenia, they can make much more money by importing expensive new things (and by controlling their importation). The government there actually recently banned the importation of perfectly usable second-hand computers (anything with a pentium3 chip or older) that are probably more powerful than many members here use at home. Importation of CRT monitors have also been banned. They also banned the import of cars that are older than (I think) 5 years - which is why most cars in Yerevan are still soviet-period wrecks. I was there november of 2005 and the traffic is a nightmare in yerevan and yes side by side with old recks are new cars, lots of them and mostly European. As for corruption, well it's part of life over there as the U.N. research has shown Armenia is one of the most corrupt countries on the planet. Having said that, we cannot stop our helping hand in money or material donations, even if 90% of it goes to the wrong hands. Armenia is like a partially assembled jigsaw puzzle, it will take some time before it is completely assembeled. As for sending clothing, I think I will just ship the clothing to my relatives and have them decide what to do, because if I ask them to give them to the needy, there is no guarranty that they will any way. The government has recently made a big increase in the import taxation for cars between 5-15 years old, and those over 15 years. The taxation increase has reportedly made used car prices go up by 10-15%. Half of the cars imported are over 15 years old - for these the taxation is now 52% of the car's cost. I know somebody who works with orphans in Armenia, and they're happy to accept help from diasporans. I can try to get more info about this if you want.
