Turkish prisons are no better or worse than most prisons. Especially today. The prison in Midnight Express has nothing to do with the real one. The prison in the movie was more like a medieval dungeon. In fact he (Stormig) would enjoy a trip there given the current state of the "prison".

I suppose it's appropriate that the ultra-rich should stay in rooms where once God-knows-what murderous or bestial activities would have regularly taken place - after all, their ancestors would have cared nothing when the abuse was going on, and they themselves still grow rich at the expense of the exploitation of others and think nothing wrong of it.

 

Maybe the Poles should rethink the future of their little Auschwitz theme park. Turn it into a chintzy little youth hostel for German backpackers. No guesses for where the pizza ovens could go.

As Dave pointed out recorded history is not exactly a recent phenomenon.Bear in mind that I am not arguing that the XX century was the bloodiest of all. It is a fact.

At least the owners are acknowledging the buildings past use. Though, even if I could afford to stay in that hotel it would take more than a layer or two of yellow paint to make me want to stay a night there.

I wouldn't even smuggle a knife inside my cabin luggage. I'd have to be a doofus to smuggle hashish into any country, for that matter.

How would one get figures of the number of people living and the number of people killed in, say, 300 BC? I think even historians can't do that even if they have the resources to get every ancient language translated. The best you can do is rely on your basic knowledge of what the world was like at the time and make an educated guess about how many people were killed.

 

You'd have a hard time convincing me that people haven't, generally, become more peaceful. It certainly is telling that some European countries went from using the guillotine to a total ban on the death penalty. (Caveat: I'm one of those diabolical people who think that retribution in the form of a death penalty is appropriate in some cases, so I'm not necessarily exalting the Europeans here.)
