Ashot Posted February 1, 2008 Report Share Posted February 1, 2008 Armenian Grand Masters to partake in the Moscow Open 2008 Armenian Grand Masters Vladimir Hakobyan, Elina Danielyan, Artashes Minasyan, Karen Asryan and Zaven Andreasyan will participate in Moscow Open 2008 International Chess Festival. It is a strong open tournament with three groups that will be held in Moscow February 2-10. The tournament will feature more than 600 participants. The competition will be held in Morelia (Mexico) February 15-23 and will continue in Linares (Spain) February 26 – March 7. the tournament will feature Armenian Grand Master Levon Aronyan, Vishwanathan Anand of India, Vasili Ivanchuk of Ukraine, Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria, Peter Leco of Hungary, Teymur Rajabov of Azerbaijan, Alexey Shirov of Spain and Magnus Carlsen of Norway. The Armenian grand master Levon Aronyan will participate in the championship for the third time. Levon won in this championship in 2006. Aronyan is to compete with Vishvanatan Anand, Vasili Ivanchuk, Veselin Topalov, Peter Lekon, Temur Rajabov, Aleksey Shirov and Magnus Marlens during the championship. All the mention chess men participated in “Korus Chess- 2008” championship in Veyk-an-Zee, Holland in January, which ended with Aronyan’s victory. As compared “Korus Chess – 2008”, in “Morelia - Linares” the chess men will have to compete in two rounds. The first round will take place on 15-23 February in Morelia, Mexico and the second round will take place on 28 February – 7 March in Linares, Spain. With 1.5 points Aonyan shares the 3rd to 5th positions with Vasili Ivanchuk of Ukraine and Peter Leco of Hungary. In Round three Vesselin Topalov defeated Vasili Ivanchuk, Wishvanathan Anand of India won a victory against Magnus Carlsen of Norway. Peter Leko played a draw with Spanish Grand Master Alexey Shirov. In the second round Aronyan had defeated Wishvanathan Anand. After 3 rounds the sole leader of the tournament is Vesselin Topalov with 2.5 points. Wishvanathan Anand is the second with 2 points. Anand, playing white in this Ruy Lopez game, committed a blunder with his knight-move on the 30th turn and gave up after 34 moves when faced with checkmate. In the day's other decisive battle Vassily Ivanchuk beat Peter Leko. The results (second round): Viswanathan Anand (1) lost to Levon Aronian (Arm, 1); Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr. 1.5) bt Peter Leko (Hun, 1). Gaining 2.5 points after four rounds, Aronyan is leading together with Wishvanathan Anand of India and Vesselin Topalov of Bulgaria. In Round 4 Anand played a draw with Teymur Rajabov of Azerbaijan, Alexey Shirov of Spain defeated Vesselin Topalov, Magnus Carlsen of Norway played a draw with Peter Leco. Alexey Shirov and Peter Leco have 2 points each, Magnus Carlsen and Vasili Ivanchuk and Teimur Rajabov have 1.5 points. As you know Topalov and Anand are Ex and current Champions. In this half of the tournament they already played with Aronian, but in the second half; sure they will compete with each other. Levon Aronyan currently occupies the 2nd position with 3 points, yielding only 0.5 points to the leader of the tournament, Wishvanathan Anand of India. In Round 5 Anand defeated Peter Leco of Hungary, Magnus Carlsen of Norway scored a victory over Bulgarian Vesselin Topalov. Teymur Rajabov played a draw with Vasili Ivanchuk of Ukraine. After five rounds Wishvanathan Anand is leading with 3.5 points. Aronyan is the second with 3 points.
