Ok. DNS stands for "Domain Name Service". It is what converts a name like "google.com" to an actual IP address that the "internet" can then use to connect and route you to the server.

What all this means is that for you, for some reason, DNS is not functioning properly which means when you type google.com, your computer doesn't have a good way to translate to to the actual IP address and connect to it.

There could be two reasons for this:

1. Your internet service provider's DNS servers are down.

2. Your computer is not configured properly.

Since you seem to be able to connect to some sites and not to others, I am willing to bet it's a temporary problem with your internet service provider. If you have cable or DSL, you might want to turn off your modem and turn it back on to let it reset. Also, do this to your computer and other routers you may have at home/office.

One thing you could try on your pc is to type this command in the cmd prompt (start->run->"cmd"->OK):

ipconfig /flushdns

This is a harmless command. Of course I am assuming you have windows xp. If you need more detail on any step feel free to ask.
