Hello, welcome to this forum!

I looked up "kalfa" on www.turkishdictionary.net and this is what I got

kalfa

1. experienced apprentice workman.

2. master builder, supervisor at a construction site.

3. formerly ranking female servant.

This is pretty well covers the meaning of Kalfa.

But in everyday life it could also mean the manager of the shop.

I just saw this.

Yes, Yervant it does on the surface, means "manager of the shop/shopmaster" i.e Forman.

It comes from the Arabic "khalfa/khalifa", "lieu-tenant/teghapah/տեղապահ, tenens locum**, holder of the place, acting chief", successor to prophet Mohammed.

See "khalef/caliph".

"Locum, short for the Latin phrase locum tenens (lit. "place-holder," akin to lieutenant), is a person who temporarily fulfills the duties of another. For example, a Locum doctor is a doctor who works in the place of the regular doctor when that doctor is absent. These professionals are still governed by their respective regulatory bodies, despite the transient nature of their positions."

----

Note that the Arabic "khali" means "empty/void", i.e "holder of a vacant seat/throne".

Once again, belatedly.

Yes,

Dear Kakachik, I didn’ have to look twice to see that the above is from a furkish dictionary.

Particularly observe # 3

Only a misogynic, racist would define a “khalifa” as a “servant”.

On the surface "kalfa/khalfa", with the "a" ending seems to be a feminine noun. Was it because she was a "harem mistress" in their cuture, like "bozavag/բոզ-աւագ?

Obviously “khalifa” is the feminine of “khalif/caliph” , successor, lieutenant, holder of the place, locum tenens, teghapah”.. Which in this case refers to the noble art of a “wet nurse”, a provider of breast milk, a substitute to a “mother” who was too busy wriggling, doing the snake dance in the sultan’s bed. In most probability those “khalifahs” were either of African, Arab or…. Armenian origin.

And. Please don’t ever believe and repeat the fable that hamid’s mother, whoever the bitch she may have been, was Armenian. That story was concocted as an insult to describe why hamid was so ugly and deformed as only “an Armenian/ermeni” can be.
