Hello,

Is there anyone out there who can throw some light my way? I have heard all the meanings of my maiden name, Chahbaz - King Falcon/hawk in Persian, etc.

Someone who was taught in a school in Armenia, said that there was a province in pre-Christian times called Chahbaz, on the border between Persia and Armenia.

I have several theories about the name, some more appealing than others, but this one intrigues me.

Welcome Moogey.

I coud only wish that many of us would search and understand what their surnames meant. Some may be very ugly.

I don’t know about a region called “Chahbaz”, actually “Shah-baz”.

And I don’t know much Persian either, however I remember from what Turkish I know the “baz” ending means “playful” as in “oyun-baz”. According to my Pers-Eng dictionary “baz” means “buffoon” , so a “shah-baz” would be an entertainer of a shah/king , i.e court jester. Also the dictionary gives examples like baz-yakoush=playful, baz-yagan=buffoun, baz-yakan=player/gambler. We can safely assume that “baz” means play/playful just like the Turkish word above.

Edit.

I searched further. Sure enough te Persian word for play/game is "baza", they go even further to define "baza" as gambling, beside that other word "gumar/qumar/khumar".

So your surname MAY mean court jester, entertainer. Even if not Armenian it may still be amusing and entertaining, but pejorative and insult Turkish surnames like Cholakian/cerebral palsied and Chirkin-an/UGLY. Your surname, even if non-Armenian , meaningjester/entertainer may still be somewhat amusing ,urnames like Topal/Lame/Kak-oghlu-ian-ian, like this buffoon who masquerade as the chairman of ANCA, an intrepid turk-fighter who goes by a most Turkish surname?

There ought to be a law!!

Why don’t we all go back to Istanbul and rediscover our manificent Turkish heritage and foret all thise nonsense of Hayastan and Armenia. We ca, once again regale our Ottoman heritage with surnames like Cholakian, Topalian and Chirkinian., Stanbolian, Konyalian… KAK-Turk-ian.

Whatever happened to Mamikonian, Yerevanian, Masisian and Sevanian??

http://www.arf.am/English/ARFNews/1998/199805c.htm

"Armenian Americans welcome France's courageous stand for human rights," said ANCA Chairman Mourad Topalian. "The French Parliament, in standing up to Turkey's shameful pressure tactics, took a major step forward in the struggle to prevent the use of genocide as a weapon against any people at any time. This decision will clearly further isolate the Turkish government in its campaign to cover-up the Armenian Genocide."

My surname is TURK-BOKHJU-OGHLU-IAN and will knock out the FRONT teeth of whoever chalenges my armenianness!!!

Yeah right! With a name like that I could easily be the Sultan Hamid of Istanbul.

ok, perhaps i can be of help, my grandpa is parska-hye and according to him it is Shah Abbas, this is the Shah that forcefully moved the Armenians to Persia and built New Julfa or something like that for them, very important figure for the Armenians. Also according to him, his ancestors came from Syunik marz of Armenia, as probably most other Parska-hye Armenians who trace their history back to the Shah Abbas move.

here is a link about Shah Abbas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbas_I_of_Safavid

thanks a lot - this is very interesting and informative.

It's not only names that are difficult to explore - what about the personal history of our forebears?

It gets more and more complicated. In the end, it will be a question of guesswork. I think I would rather be the King Falcon/Hawk than the court jester.

Of course!

How can we forget that!

Ou Nairian aghchikneri hezajkoun par enq siroum!

:) :)

thank you Kakachik,

This is what started me off in the first place - a friend said, is your name linked with Shah Abbas of Persia.

One of my theories is that, as all those Armenians were displaced and made to live in New Julfa, Persia, a few of them adopted the name of the King. In Egypt, a lot of new born boys were named after the king Farouk, as a form of tribute. Yet another theory is that one of my ancestors was keeper of the king's falcons.

Another theory I like is the one that links me with King Abbas Bagratuni of Armenia. (928-951)
