whew. just got 100 popups closed. My ie is acting nuts. even on legitimate sites it opens popups that tell me to get anti spyware programs. Btw there are more spyware ads about how to get rid of spyware than any other.

Anyway. I've tried lavasoft AdAware, scanned the system. didn't find anything worthy except a few cookies. Installed yahoo toolbar, alexa toolbar, google toolbar. All of them supposedly have anti popup stuff. Scanned with yahoo toolbar's antispyware tool. Again worthless. Even IE 6 has anti popup. But i still get them. I even have northon antispam popup blocking enabled.

Someone help me get rid of them. It's kindof random though. Sometimes it won't open the whole day. sometimes it starts acting nuts.

Once the spyware is on your machine, ZoneAlarm & popup blockers aren't worth squat.

Get Spybot by Grisoft, install, and update it's definitions. Backup your registries, or make a system restore point. Restart your machine in safe mode. Run Spybot. Restart again in regular mode, enable the IE popup blocker (you don't need all the other toolbars, some of them may even contain the spyware!) or better yet, use Firefox. Stop surfing for pron/warez ;)

Let us know how it goes....

Spybot is excellent. I think the new one has a feature to show you everything that can be started anywhere in windows. If not (from an earlier post I had made):

Autoruns

Shows you everything that can start anywhere in windows. It took me 2 hours to find a freaking spyware on a friend's laptop. It had registerd itself as both internet explorer and windows explorer shell extensions ... I would fix IE, reboot, and it would be back! Without this, I wouldn't have found the problem.

I have seen a spyware which brings up popups when you doubleclick on anything. So basically your system is infected and it needs some cleanup.

Use spysweeper. Although they did something to their software and now when you install it it ads a service to the services and is always active and running in the background even though you shut down the application. The problem is that it remarkably slows down the operation of the system. It is trying to act like an antivirus by checking everything you are trying to access.

I would suggest you to install and run it. After you feel that your system is clean just go ahead and uninstall it.

P.S. when you install and update spysweeper with the latest definitions just restart your system (keep pressing F8 when it boots) and go to safe mode as an Administrator and run it from there. One more thing. Spysweeper is not a free software anymore. It is around $30 (unless you can find a hacked full version) but it is worth of that amount.
