She says to memory he was someone in armenian history.. thinks a prince. That doesn't really help at all.

I've been told antraneg means first born.. but where does antranik come from? does it have a meaning?

Antranik, Andranik or Andronik is a very Armenian name which in Classical Armenian means 'first born male'. There were few very famous Andraniks in the Armenian history, among them the dynasty of the Byzantine emperors of Armenian decent the Androniks - V-VI century AC.

I don't think Adranik is of Armenian origin, rather Roman or something like that. How about "Titus Andronicus" the famous Shakespearian play.

Also in Northern California there is a gourmet supermarket chain called

"Andronico's" and it was started by Frank Andronico, a Greek immigrant, more about him below. Also there is Russian Orthodox bishop Andronic Nickolsky who started the Japanese Orthodox Church etc etc.

So I would definately rule out Andranik being of Armenian origin

antranik (as you wrote it) is a very armenian name meaning the oldest; the first born; coming first. It is probably derived from Greek as the latin Andronicus was.

The last famous armenian Antranik was a national hero of the resistance to Turks in defense of Armenians in the ottoman empire (Bulgaria, Anatolia and so on) and in defence of the Republic of Armenia (1918-1920) thereafter. After the defence of Zangezour he disbanded his troops in the town of Etchmiadzin, living all that he had to the Catholicossat.

In 1922, established himself in California where he died August 30 or 31, 1927. In 1929 was buried in Père Lachaise, the monumental graveyard of Paris. In February 2000, his ashes where brought in Armenia to the graveyard of Yerablur at he presence of one (perhaps the last) of his soldiers, 102-year-old Grigor Ghazarian.

You'll find a lot about him on the web.

Welcome Andy!

This is the Andranik you must be looking for;

http://hyeforum.com/index.php?showtopic=11795&hl=ozanian

Yes Andranik (Antranig) does mean “first born/elder [son]”. According to reliable sources it is from the Latin “ante”, without going into details we already know that the prefix means “before/pre”, many examples in Latin, even such as “antipasto”, before dinner/meal. Many assume Andranik is from the Greek Andros/Andrew. In fact often Andranik ends up as Andy, and even as Tony playing on the diminutive, endearing Ando/Anto…. Antony? The Armenian form of Andrew is Andreas.

It is altogether possible that Andranik may have been employed as a proper name on the model of Andronicus , literally - “conquering man/ man conqueror, conqueror of men… “etc

There are many Androncuses, even Shakespeare has a drama “Titus Andronicus”, but the most probable of them all is the one below from where the (Christian) Armenian name Andranik may have become popular.

Note that below the Apostle Paul refers to them as “relatives”, yet according to some sources, the word he used is the Greek “syg-genes” which can also be interpreted as compatriot.

THE HOLY APOSTLE ANDRONICUS

Andronicus was one of the Seventy Apostles. He was a kinsman of St. Paul, as Paul himself writes: "Greet Andronicus and Junia, my relatives and my fellow prisoners; they are prominent among the apostles and they were in Christ before me" (Romans 16:7). Paul also mentions St. Junia, assistant of Andronicus. Andronicus was installed as bishop in Pannonia, but did not remain in one place, rather preached the Gospel throughout Pannonia. With St. Junia, he succeeded in converting many to Christ and destroyed many idolatrous temples. They both possessed the power of Grace to work miracles through which they drove out demons from men and healed every type of disease and illness. They both suffered for Christ and thus received the two-fold wreath: the apostolic wreath and the martyr's wreath. Their holy relics were discovered in the regions of Eugenius (February 22).

Regardless, Andranik is a sacred Armenian name. Look at Zoravar Andranik above.

Edit;

PS. Lest I forget. The Armenian text, translated by our intrepid “targmanchats” reads in the Epistle/Tought ar Hrovmayetsis/Romans 16,7 ; “Բարեւ ըրեք Անդրոնիկոսի ու Յունիայի, իմ ազգականներուս…./Barev @req Andronikosi ou Juniayi, im azgakannerous…..”

See the rest here. Roll down to Romans 16,7

i've never heard of the name antranik being associated with anyone named "andronicus".

antranig means first-born, and whether it is derived from a greek rather than a pure armenian root, in any case, the meaning in armenian is "firstborn" as in "the firstborn son"...it is an epithet of Jesus, Jesus was Mary's firstborn child and is referred to as such in the bible luke 2:7 "And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn." in the armenian translation of the bible first born child is "antranig". thus just like the name "mgrdich" which literally means "baptist," is understood by all as referring to john the baptist, antranig refers to baby jesus. the proof of this is that the name day for Antranig is january 6, Armenian Christmas.

so its an armenian christian name, but after antranik ozanian became famous as "general antranik" the great armenian hero, it became a very popular armenian name, and people were naming their kids after the general and had forgotten the religious meaning behind the name. meanwhile i'm surprised that the first couple people to respond to this topic did not mentioned general antranik...come on people this is like one of the most important people in armenian history, right up there with st. gregory, st. mesrop, st. vartan, and gomidas.

Ցավոք այդ բառը թուրքերէն է եւ գրուի էնիկ/ enik, է ինչպէս e as in ever. իմ թուրքերէն բառարանը կ`ապացուցէ թէ այդ նշանակի անհաս շուն, եւ կարող է գործածուիլառ ի պատշաճ թէ իբր փաղաքշանք, ինչպէս շունիկ /puppy , եւ թէ իբր անարգանք այսինքն շան լակոտ:

Երբեմն Աննիկ իգական անունը կը գործածուի իբր Աննա -ի փաղքշկան ձեւ
