hayemyes Posted April 29, 2006 Report Share Posted April 29, 2006 im sure many of you have come across the Parseghian Records music show; i'm not sure on what channel it airs over there in california, but we get it here in canada on satellite, horizon tv, that is... lately, i have become unable to endure 5 minutes of this show, because it has become filled with russian material, and it seems the show is some sort of promotion of russian culture on armenian tv... if u start watching the show, ull probably encounter at least 2 russian music videos, whether it be from "yerevan-moskva transit" show, abraham russo, russian new year and i don't know what else...on top of that, you'll notice that 25% of the commercials for cds have something russian in them, or are simply commercials for russian cds... what i find ironic is the amount of russian material in the armenian march 8 concert dvd which is newly released and promoted by parseghian...about half the songs in that dvd/cd are russian...if you look at the previous dvds of the same collection, such as the new year festivity dvds, you will also notice a lot of russian material (eventhough in the first dvds there is much less than in the later ones)...however, if you check out the russian new year (new year in moscow) dvd which is also promoted by parseghian, you won't find a SINGLE armenian song in the whole dvd...why do armenians have to make 10 songs out of 20 russian to sell their dvds? why does parseghian promote such material? why do we love russian culture so much and encourage it when they don't encourage a single bit of ours (exceptions are always present, but rare)...and yet, we condemn severely oriental-sounding armenian music... i don't want anyone to misinterpret me, saying i have a very conservative way of thinking...i'm not saying that including some foreign material in an armenian music show is totally wrong...it is wrong to some point, because if we're watching armenian tv is to see armenian material, and nothing else, since we can always switch to that russian or english channel to hear such music...but let's say we tolerate some foreign material, since we're a country which has one of the biggest diasporas in the world, and are closer to foreign cultures than our own sometimes, and it would be an efficient way of attracting attention onto armenian material; so even if we tolerate such material, should we give it the lion's part of our programs? and i am not exaggerating...you could watch the show and would come to the same conclusion...i, for one, don't understand a single bit of russian, and personnaly am not interested in understanding a single letter of it (i believe our great love for this country has given birth in me to some sort of hostility to it, eventhough i don't dislike the people in ANY way), and i am sure many people do not understand it, and yet, we are forced to endure russian material on an armenian tv channel which is supposed to broadcast armenian-related material 24 hours a day...on the other hand, many people are from middle-eastern countries and are closer to arab culture, and yet, we don't see any oriental-oriented material? there is obviously a disbalance somewhere...i am not saying we should encourage oriental-oriented material, however, if we are to encourage one extreme, we should be fair to all armenians and encourage the other as well... i wrote to parseghian a while back about this issue, and had no answer from them, eventhough the contact page assured a quick answer to all suggestions and matters...and i noticed, maybe out of paranoia, that russian material took an even greater place in the show in the weeks after my email with the release of new russian dvds and armenian material filled with russian stuff...i find it is a disgrace, and it is a very annoying one, since we seem to encourage and come to our knees in front of a culture that doesn't even give a **** about ours... Its all business and profit taking and its not about Armenian affairs. If one day for whatever reasons there is demand for Chinese songs, then it will be mostly Chinese not Russian or Oriental. We Hayastantsis like Russian music and movies thats why they play it. i understand that armenia was under the influence of russia for so many years...but that doesnt justify in any way why we shouldnt let go of that influence now that were independant and dont rely on russia in any cultural way...maybe you should check out the Hayer song from HAYELI group, it explains everything so well...we have our own independent state and yet our government uses russian words in their speeches and news programs, our channels broadcast russian music, armenia speaks russian... i believe it is time to change... it is very hypocrit, in this case, to criticize the middle eastern armenians who listen to arabic music, since they were under that influence for very long...and yet many of us criticize them for that...which is not right besides, as ive said before...since russian music isnt armenian sounding, its as bad for ppl to listen to middle eastern or turkish sounding armenian music than russian music...its all the same...
