Iran's first vice president Mohammad Mokhber to become interim president before new elections

YEREVAN, MAY 20, ARMENPRESS. Iran's first vice president Mohammad Mokhber, based on the country's constitution, will become interim president following the death of Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash.

According to Reuters, as interim president, Mokhber is part of a three-person council, along with the speaker of parliament and the head of the judiciary, that will organize a new presidential election within 50 days of the president's death.

As reported earlier, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and the country's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian were martyred in the helicopter crash that occurred on Sunday. President Raisi was returning from a ceremony to inaugurate a dam on Iran’s border with the Republic of Azerbaijan, when his helicopter crashed upon landing in Varzaqan region on Sunday.

Nikol Pashinyan had a meeting with the acting president of Iran

YEREVAN, MAY 22, ARMENPRESS. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met with Acting President of Iran Mohammad Mokhber in Tehran.

Nikol Pashinyan expressed condolences to the acting President of Iran, vice-presidents, members of the government and the entire Iranian people in connection with the death of the President of the Iranian Republic, Foreign Minister and those accompanying them, reported the Prime Minister's Office.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the deaths of Ebrahim Raisi and Hossein Amir-Abdollahian were a great tragedy. Armenia and the Armenian people mourn and share the pain of the people of friendly Iran.

Nikol Pashinyan emphasized that he and Ebrahim Raisi were connected not only by partnership but also by warm friendship, which positively influenced Armenian-Iranian relations. The Prime Minister expressed hope that the programs outlined with Ebrahim Raisi will be implemented and that positive relations between the two countries will continue.

The acting President of Iran noted that the presence of the Prime Minister of Armenia gives them strength in these difficult days. According to him, the disaster shocked the entire people of Iran, and he appreciates that friendly Armenia today shares their grief.

Mohammad Mokhber assured that all the programs outlined by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia with Ebrahim Raisi, aimed at developing Armenian-Iranian relations, will be long-lasting.

On May 22, the Prime Minister of Armenia will participate in the official ceremony to pay tribute and offer condolences for the President of the Republic of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian, and their companions in Tehran, as informed by the Prime Minister's office.

Iran committed to all agreements with Armenia: Acting president

Iran’s Acting President Mohammad Mokhber says the country will remain committed to all agreements with neighboring Armenia despite an upcoming change of administration that has been required by law because of the death of President Ebrahim Raeisi in a helicopter crash on May 19.

“We will stand by all of our obligations and agreements with Armenia,” Mokhber told visiting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in a meeting in Tehran on Wednesday.

He said Iran’s strategy of expanding relations with neighbors will not change with the passing of a president.

The former vice-president and current head of the executive branch said people in Iran constitute the main element of national power.

That fact, he said, was proven with the massive presence of people in funeral ceremonies held for President Raeisi and Foreign Minister Hossien Amirabdollahian and other officials martyred in the helicopter crash.

Pashinyan was in Tehran to attend a state funeral for the crash victims. The Armenian prime minister said he was deeply saddened by the loss of both Raeisi and Amir-Abdollahian since he enjoyed close personal connections with them.

He said Armenia and Iran had reached a series of good agreements during the time in office of Raeisi and Amir-Abdollahian, adding that the government of Armenia is totally committed to the implementation of bilateral agreements.

Raeisi and Amir-Abdollahian, along with two top officials of the Iranian province of East Azerbaijan, and four other people on board the helicopter were returning from a dam inauguration ceremony on Iran’s border with the Republic of Azerbaijan when the aircraft crashed into forests in Varzaqan region.

Iran acting FM calls for executing Leader’s order on ties with Armenia

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani has emphasized the importance of implementing the statements of the Islamic Revolution’s Supreme Leader on achieving strategic objectives of Iran and Armenia.

Bagheri Kani made the remark on Thursday in a phone call with Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.

The Iranian official was referring to Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei’s statements during a recent meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. At that meeting, the Supreme Leader had called for efforts to help achieve strategic goals set by the two countries.

The Iranian acting FM also said that Tehran is committed to playing an effective role in maintaining stability and security in the Caucasus region.

He further expressed appreciation toward Armenian officials for voicing their solidarity with Iran over the martyrdom of president Ebrahim Raisi and his entourage on May 19.

The Armenian minister, for his part, expressed condolences on the demise of president Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and their companions.

Mirzoyan described as important Iran’s role in enhancing peace in the south Caucasus region.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Iran Mehdi Sobhani stated this in a conversation with journalists at the Iranian Embassy, answering the question of whether any changes in relations with Armenia are possible after the elections.

The ambassador emphasized that Iran's policy towards Armenia is very principled, and the governments that come to power act within the framework of this policy.

“Iran’s policy towards Armenia was voiced by the leader of the Iranian revolution, it was also emphasized when the Prime Minister of Armenia visited Iran for the last time. We respect and support the territorial integrity of Armenia. We are against any change in internationally recognized borders, as well as any geopolitical changes,” the ambassador said and added that Tehran’s fundamental policy will never change, even though the governments in Iran and Armenia may change.

The Iranian Ambassador noted that Armenia is an important country for Tehran, a good and honest neighbor.

“The security and interests of the two countries are intertwined. This fundamental policy cannot be changed by a change of government,” concluded Mehdi Sobhani.

Iran’s presidential election goes to runoff

YEREVAN, JUNE 29, ARMENPRESS. Results in Iran’s 14th presidential election show that Iran's presidential elections have gone to a runoff between Massoud Pezeshkian and Saeed Jalili slated for July 5, according to the spokesperson for Iran’s election headquarters, Mohsen Eslami.

Pezeshkian received almost 10.5 million votes while the runner up Jalili received almost 9.5 million votes, according to numbers published by state news agency IRNA.

"Twenty-four million people cast their ballots out of 60 million eligible voters, with a turnout of 40%," Eslami said.

Under Iranian electoral law, a runoff between the two top candidates is held on the first Friday after the result is announced if neither wins at least 50% of the votes.

Masoud Pezeshkian wins Iran's presidential election

 

 July 5 (Reuters) - The low-profile moderate Masoud Pezeshkian, who has pledged to open Iran to the world and deliver freedoms its people have yearned for, has won the country's run-off presidential vote, the interior ministry said on Saturday.

"By gaining majority of the votes cast on Friday, Pezeshkian has become Iran's next president," it said.

The participation was around 50% in a tight race between Pezeshkian, the sole moderate in the original field of four candidates, and hardline former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, a staunch advocate of deepening ties with Russia and China.
