DominO123
There was allegedly an Armenian law, which requires permissions to get out books of historic values out of Armenia, yet in daily basis there are books on ebay, manuscripts which could not be replaced. How do we know they end up in the right hands? Should there be no regulations? A Turkish scholar get arrested for books easily replaceble, yet unique manuscripts are given away like this. For all we know, they could be bought by the Turkish government and destroyed. I can not place a value on manuscripts, I am not a professional there, but I can place values on some works relating to the Armenian massacres which had one single edition and with a limited number printed, but this is even worst because those books are not from Armenia and such transactions will never be regulated. The place of such books are in museums or in the hand of people that will take care of them not placed on ebay like this for whom could manage to buy them. Also, many of those books should be scanned and digitally preserved. It's really a shame.
Takoush
Of course I totally agree. That is disgusting and that's terrible as those books and manuscripts should be very well preserved. No one should be allowed to take them out nor be placed on ebay!! That is a sheer shame!!! Quebecer how can we have them put a stop to it!!! Edited April 10, 2006 by Anahid Takouhi
armjan
preservation is really important, what's gets me is, if we are creative enough to think of this, why arent the ppl who have possession of these artifacts doing something about it? isn't there a branch of armenian gov responsible for manuescripts/literature/etc? DominO123
preservation is really important, what's gets me is, if we are creative enough to think of this, why arent the ppl who have possession of these artifacts doing something about it? isn't there a branch of armenian gov responsible for manuescripts/literature/etc? There was that law supposed to protect historic heritage which was used to charge a Turkish scholar, but the sort of things you find on eBay going out of Armenia are worst. Nothing could be done for things outside of Armenia, but if there is a law already existing why don't ehy apply it?

DominO123
Form a a organization, run a telethon and all who are concerned will donate money and you can start buying Another idea would be this. A preservation team. When bits such as this start they check who is selling it and who are bitting, for irreplaceble books or manuscripts if the bit is won by someone the team place itself on the middle, the book is sent to them first, they digitise it, not with a scanner(it could damage the work) but with a digital camera as well as a picture of the fiber of the paper and the pigmentation under a microscope, and they keep a sample of both(won't damage the book, the sample is really microscopic and would be unnoticeable), I do have the material for this and could perform it, I already analyse fibers it would take 5 minutes per book, which isen't a big deal. Then the team reship the book to the winner. I don't think most of those that win the bit will care of this delay, while many probably don't know on what they are bitting on, they probably have good intentions and will not care of the delay for the preservation of the content of the book as well as the fiber and pigment for autentification purpouses of the digital archive. I personally must be realist, I don't have the time to be on ebay like this, or digitise, I had many such projects in the past and haven't completed a single of them, but for the fiber and pigmenttion archiving I can, as well as taking few pictures on summers only. Most of the work should be on taking the pictures.
