Respect, Tolerance, And This Forum.

I think respect is something we earn from others and something that others earn from us.

And I think tolerance is something we are born with (some people have high degree of tolerance, some have law degree, some have non...), and which can actually change throughout life because of the experiences and knowledge we gain (or at least i hope so).

As for HyeForum, i like it :)

I think dis-respect is earned, not respect. All people have a default amount of respect (at least from me). If they do disrespectful things then their respect decreases. And if they do respectful things then the amount respect increases. Edited by Sasun

very simple answer

Preaching is "If you don't believe in god you will go to hell!"

Not preaching "I am a religious individual and based on my beliefs, if you don't have god in your life you will go to hell"

Fair enough.

I agree with the second part. Your first part doesn't match the second part ... but I agree that the respect metric can increae or decrease from the starting default value. The absolute value of the default value is irrelevant since we compare respect levels. But ya, in the same way that respect can be earned, it can be disearned (or more disrespect added).

Actually the default value does matter, because if it is 0 then that is what you were saying - respect must be earned. I am saying, everyone by default has a value of >0, it does not need to be earned initially. Then it changes up and down.

No. Dis-respect is based on judgment, respect comes from the heart/feelings.

I heard many times people to complain that some other ones (the child, or a friend, a relative etc) has no respect towards her/him. And I'd ask that person: "have u done anything to make the person respect u the way u want?" NO. "so, -i'd say,- the person has no special feelings for u,including respect. " The person would tell me then: "but i haven't done anything bad!" and my answer would be: "and that is why they don't disrespect u!"

Respect is not a mere feeling for me, it is something strong and deep. i have some friends that i only love, but don't respect very much (but i don't disrespect them, cause i love them: it's impossible to love and disrespect someone at the same time), cause they are nice to me, but they are not good people: they enjoy hurting others' feelings.

My definition of tolerance is pretty much in-line with the dictionary definition:

Tolerance: acceptance of different views: the acceptance of the differing views of other people, for example, in religious or political matters, and fairness toward the people who hold these different views

However, tolerance of intolerant views is not covered in this definition. That's where I draw the line. You have continuously made an argument that that is intolerant. But we have to draw the line somewhere. Obviously we have refused to tolerate genocide denial. We also have not been tolerant of those that continuously post hateful and disrespectful material. I don't make any distinction with religion. Same rules apply. If you are tolerant of others, you will be tolerated ... simple as that.

Can't help but remember the South Park episode with the gingivitis... :)
