System of a Down Moves Up

They're wacky! They're complex! They're Armenian! They're one of the

most popular rock bands with Lycos users right now. They're the Los

Angeles-based art-metal quartet System of a Down.

For the last few weeks, System of a Down has received more searches

than currently-dormant Lycos 50 mainstays like Limp Bizkit and Korn.

This week they stand as the #5 most-searched rock band.

System of a Down is riding a wave of interest based on their new

album Toxicity and their single "Chop Suey," the video for which is

on MTV roughly every eight minutes. The band is known for being

political, and for being Armenian. They're very proud and vocal about

their heritage.

The band's music itself is pretty complex, much more so than the

angry rap-rock bands they seem to be associated with. It's a stew of

aggressive guitars, intricate time signature shifts, and dreamy

melodic passages with ethnic Mediterranean underpinnings. Sort of a

cross between Tool and Minor Threat, stuck in Egypt.

System of a Down is on tour with two other groups we've written about

at the Lycos 50 - Slipknot and Mudvayne. The tour is called "Pledge

of Allegiance." Believe it or not, they came up with that name before

September 11.
