Duduk Reed Problem

Hi,

I am a newbie in duduk playing, and I desperately need some pointers.

I'm having trouble with my duduk reeds. I'm very new to duduk

playing, and whenever I play for more than a couple of minutes the reed

opening becomes too wide and it becomes very difficult to get a decent

sound from it. I keep the reed firmly closed when it's stored so it is

fine when I first start playing. I've tried securing the bridle more

firmly, but while this works in the short term,

Any info, recommendation or pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks,

OS

Thanks for the replies. Here are the answers for your queries:

1. When I first start playing, the reed is closed completely. After I make it wet, I start to get some sounds out of it - for 5-6 minutes. After that it becomes impossible for me to get any sound out of it. I haven't tried with alternative reeds.

2. I bought the duduk from eBay. I know you won't approve it but as I said I am a newbie, I just wanted to try it. I contacted the guy I bought the duduk from, and he told me the master is Samvel Markosian. I will try to post the pictures as soon as possible.

I am guessing that I am doing something wrong somewhere. Any pointer would be appreciated.

Thanks,

OS

assuming that your reed is good or good enough to play

most reed's on eBay do need work - and are only 50~60% ready - you might need to tune them and work on them .....

any new reed can have such problems - gave it more time - massage the tip of the reed after you wet it /

http://www.duduk.com/reed/reed-mas.gif

what you need to undressed is that your reed is new and in order for the reed to work and make good sound - vibration / resonance - the lisp of the reed need to be touching each other 2 to 2 1/2 mm

http://www.duduk.com/reed/reed-2mm.gif

this is wan you will have the maximum sound

agine assuming that your reed is good it's not a Souvenir

#1 if you wet the reed to much you will have this problem

#2 wan wetting the reed - only wet the tip of the reed

#3 wan storing the reed - close the cap just enough to close the 2 lips of the reed - do not force the reed cap

#4 wan storing the reed make sure the brittle is Free- it's not pressing the reed

#5 Samvel Markosian ??? sorry don;t know him - and i know most every duduk MASTER in Armenia

if you need additional help - stop by at our web site, on the top you can see a link to duduk FAQ.

most of the eBay duduk "masters" do print that page and offer them as free instructions

Is your reed wet enough when you first begin playing? Also, do you have similar problems when playing with alternate reeds?

Oh Movses, I'm terribly sorry to hear that. It must be tough.

You used to play the duduk and the shvi regularly? Did you study those instruments seriously?

I'm taking Armenian music history (finally!) and I love, love, love our musical heritage, and of course our heritage in general.

Anoushik, where do you take Armenian music history? I live in the LA area, and this is something that I am very interested in.

Thanks
