Help With Translation

Hello.

My son is trying desperately to convert a few words from American text to Armenian. We have tried numerous translators online, and different fonts. However, when he showed them to a relative who can read (but not really write) Armenian she said the words meant something totally different then what they actually were. I tried the Latin To Armenian Converter on this site, and it looks great, we are just nervous it might not be the exact text (or mean something else).... But can someone actually hand write them out and send them to him via email to be sure it is correct.

He is proud of his armenian heritage and wants to get a small tattoo with these words....

The words are:

SACRFICE

DETERMINATION

PERSEVERANCE

LOVE

Thank you so very much.

Thank you.

So, should he first get the word how it is said in Armenian, then written in the text? So confusing! Long time ago I could read and speak the language, but over time without anyone around, I lost it.

For sacrifice -- he means it as he has sacrificed a lot. If that makes sense.

Thanks so much for your help :)

Just to clarify:

The converter on hyeforum (HERE) is actually a transliterator and NOT a translator. If you type in LOVE into the converter in English, you won't get the Armenian word for LOVE.

The idea behind the converter is to have the ability to write armenian words phonetically using latin letters, and acquire the respective armenian spelling using the armenian alphabet. It takes a bit of getting used to - you may need to refer to the Reference Table for more precise spelling.

Hope this helps.

Incidentally, in my Armenian-English dictionary I have :

as a verb, to sacrifice as zohel - զոհել

as a noun, as zohaberutyun - զոհաբերություն

Sorry I can't write these in Armenian 'cause I currently don't have the fonts or the driver in my computer, but here I go

Sacrifice = (n) Zoh or Zohoghutiun

Determination = (n) Vchir

Perseverance = (n) Hamberutiun

Love = (n) Ser

Thank you SOOO very much! Now, I can just use the driver and he will be set!

We always used 'hamperutyun' - համբերություն - to mean 'patience'.

Persistence could possibly be translated as 'hamarel' - համարել - but there's sort of a negative connotation to that....

Expat, if you're using Win XP you can take advantage of the built in Unicode support to write in Armenian letters. If you're on an older system, you may need to install ANLS (Armenian National Language Support for windows) - it's not very tricky, but it's older and only uses ASCII characters (so anyone using unicode will not be able to read.)

Look through the Help forum, or search the site and you should be able to find some tips on how to do it. If you can't find what you need feel free to post a question in the help section, and I'm sure someone will be able to give you a hand.

Love is easy and simple as suggested by others- ser/սեր.

You know me, I would rather make the words as short and simple without losing the gist .

It seems like Harut shares my allergy to long words as well, specially the loose habit of adding “utyun” to every word possible. Look at his name, Harut not Harutyun. ;)

Sacrifice; there may be many translations but the shortest and the most common is “zoh/զոհ”.

Determination; It was suggested “vjir”, true, yet consider the word in its meaning of (judicial) sentence. Does it have anything to do with “vojir/crime”? It seems we are looking for a word to impart the meaning of will power then I would suggest kamq, կամք.

Perseverence, once again from its implication my choice would tokal/տոկալ i.e to persevere, to last to endure.

Caution!

We must also be careful that thw ords don't mean something tasteless and risque in other languages.

Kamq to me sounds too mild seeing that it means "will" or "goodwill" which is not really the same thing as the determination we are looking for. The word determination has an aggressive meaning to it, right?

Tokal is another example of a translation that makes the meaning too mild. Though I don't think hamberutiun sounds 100% right, but I think we have yet to find a good word for perseverance.

Barev SAS,

Long time no see.

I did consider those words, the problem with them, as you point out they are indirect, from English to Russian and back to Armenian. We know that words lose their original meaning and conform to particular cultures.

Hamar, and for that matter "himar/supid" is more akin to the English word "obstinant/stubborn", not a very eandearing term, but more so, whether our sources realize this, I have not checked Ajarian, the word comes from the Arabic (or is it visa versa, I must always qualify my response as we are not sure who borrowed from whom) "himar" that means donkey. It is easy to see how it may have evolved to mean what it means in Armenian, the donkey, more specifically jack-ass or mule is the symbol of obstinance, and maybe stupidity.

Sahmanum, once again a full circle, is based on its meaning of demarcation, as when we say "the borders were determined", wheras what we are looking for is as in " I am determined to wipe Turkey off the map". In this case the closest Armenian word would be "voroshel" (the original meaning was to fdifferentiate, to choose, to decide). Yet as I indicated above, the way I understand it, the original request was to find a word to describe "determination", a decision, voroshum, however due to my "allergy" to long words I chose "will power" "kamq".

This may explain how some native Armenian words that are borrowed by our neighbors, corrupted and redefined come back to us to totally mean something else. Take "heathen/hethanos" for example that originally merely meant "people/ethnos" came back to us to mean something very debasing and sacriligious ..

well.. heathen. whatever the hell it may mean.
