Tajik, Dajig

In another post I indicated that "tajik" means big, giant. It still stands, and that the Armenian word "tajar", temple and the Russian word "dascha" are based on that premise, both meaning big house, big building. I also indicated that in some circles particularly in the Armenian "tajik" is synonymous to Muslim, in particular Turkish Muslims, even though at times some Armenians may refer to all and any Muslim as tajik, to western Armenians dajig, and that at times Turkey is called Dajgastan.(Tajkastan, not Tjikistan).

Here is the rason why.

In the old days the Persians called the Arabs of Mesopotamia, icluding the Phoenicians and the Canaanites (in fact it turns out these two people were one and the same) Tajik, from where were derived the terms of tajik horse, tajik camel and even tajik dog, the premise was speed, all of the above beasts ar known for speed, specially the Arabian horse. When the Arabs converted to Islam the name Tajik was carried over and it became synonymous with the religion. Similarly when the Seljuks arrived and converted to Islam they alse were labeled as Tajik in turn.

The original Pahlavi word for it was "tachik", and it was appied to such as the camel as "ushti tachik", and "asbi tazi" to fast horses. Further the Persians called Arabs who were native to Persia "tazi".

Note that in the Turkish fast running dogs, i.e the greyhound is known as "tazi".

In my previous post also indicated that the Tajik people were named such because of their big stature. Could it be visa versa? Or does it have to do with their religion?

We have also spoken about why the Arabs call the Persians Ajami/Ajemi, and why it has come to mean less than desirable, savage, uncivilized. The Arabs don't use it in that sense but in Turkey "ajemi/acemi" still means "savage, uncivilized".

Nobody, not a single soul, in Armenia refers to muslims as tajiks.

Tajiks are nationals of the country of Tajikistan as far as Armenian citizens care.

The only people I have ever heard call mudslims tajiks are Libanantsis.

That explains why I call them Dajig. :D
