gamavor
I've just seen the movie. Its awesome. It went beyond my expectations. Atom really respects his audience. Just one thing. The most stunning episode for me personally was the analogy with the paint and the heroin of both "incidental" characters. Arshil and the Customs officer. One had covered the hands of his mother and the other covered his hands with heroin, both of them trying to cover the past. One with paint and the other with drugs. The movie needs to be seen at least one more time. I'm sure Egoian will have great success in Europe. KUDOS to all who made this movie. Really proud of them. PS: The non-Armenians in this movie were soooo ARmenian! Getze!
Guest Fadi
Gamavor, I do not agree with your version. The drug was meant to be in the cane, in comparaison of Ali's denial, not Gorky's painting. What the message behind that is that you can not deny something you ignore... Raffi had no idea of what was in those canes, like Ali had no idea that the genocide happened. The drug was something explosif, once it was uncovered it was something very hard to deal with, like a Turk knowing the genocide happened by opening the Pandors box, there is something explosif in this box that could explose in your face, like the custum officer ended up of having drug in his hand and had to deal with it. The drug as well meant something wrong, something defended when you ignore what is in. Turks defend that there was no genocide, but they have no idea of what is in the pandors box. While Gorky far from trying to hide his past, is constantly leaving in his past by his painting, once he finishes a painting that took 10 years to compleat, he refuse to let it go, he refuses to make peace with his past. gamavor
It doesn't matter what was in the canes. If there was a film it would have been equally explosive. The question is how you deal with it?:-)If it was a film, Raffi would have been able to walk away free, just like he walked away although there was heroin in the canes.:-)
Guest Fadi
Yes ! exactlly, for Raffi it does not matter, but for the viewer it does, the Custum officer wanted to open the Pandor box, and he had his hands on the drug he has to deal, like the Turkish republic that one day or another, will have the Pandor box opened and what is in will explose in his face, by then, they won't be able to play Ani's role trying to forget her past and not wanting to remember how her second husband was dead, because unlike Celia, the Custom officer knew the explosif truth at the end, and he was left with the truth to deal with, alone. 564312
Domino out of all the people you are the only one who embraces this movie with so much enthusiasm; come to think of it I wonder I you are Egoyan himself or maybe his wife? wh00t
Alright, let's start this. Not really a review, I'll post some random thoughts every now and then. **spoiler** Perhaps the most troubling scene of the entire movie for me was not a genocide shot at all. Rather, it was the touching dance sequence of Arshile Gorky. With a heartbreakingly forlorn look on his face, Gorky puts on an old folk record and tries desperately to rekindle his lost past which was so brutally taken away from him. Look mom, he is saying, I remember our culture. I haven't forgotten. If any scene has stuck with me weeks after seeing the film, it is this one. Very powerful. I am very surprised that there hasn't been more commentary on it, rather more attention has been given to another dance scene of quite a different nature... Guest Fadi
I have this scene in my head as well, it was a powerfull scene that I found somehow more emotional than symbolic. There is another scene that is still in my head, it is at the end, when Gorky was at the primaire, looking at the presentation picture of the movie, like if it was a masterpiece a painting, his painting, admiring the final product. What really remains in my head are as well the scenes with Gorky on his work place, like if the movie was about him, its weird.
