I want to find out the meaning of my name (Yeghishe), I have been searching on the net for a while now and still can't find it. So if there is some one who knows what it means or at least were it originated from, pleas tell me! I would really apprisciate that!! Thanks in advance!! The variant of your name in English is Elliot, also Ellis (as in Ellis Island). L became GH like in many other armenian words like "catoghikos" etc. As you already know your name in Armenian starts with E not Y, the last S and SH is something that happened when the name was further Armenized. One correction however. "Elias" and "Elijah" transliterate into Armenian as "Eghia/Yeghya", EghIyah to be more precise. The correct classical form of Elishah is EghiSeh, S not SH. All are based on the Hebrew "El" which they claim to mean "god". Consider other Semitic languages whouse the root word of "el/il/al" as in "ilah/Allah". Don't tell me! As long as we have those idiotic latter day "prophets" like Pat Robertson and his ilk! Among many the best example would be the Aramaic Moshe v the Greek Mosses. I said Greek since it seems many of the Biblical names were transliterated into Armemian from the Greek original. In many other Semitic languages the S is S except in Hebrew and Aramaic. Did/do they have a lishping I mean lisping problem? Barev MosJan How did Khorenatsi spell his name? Did he write it as "moUses" from the Semitic Mousa, where the LatinU (hyun) is being read as V? Would MoVses be more correctly written and read as "MoUses", i.e MoWses? Once again that pervasive Greek "es" ending. There may be evidence that "Moses" is in fact a corruption of "Mses", bases on "ms" from the Egyptian "ms" , yet another corruption of "msr", the name the locals call their land of Egyptos. This will bring us to the fact that Moses was not even Hebrew but a "msri/masri", i.e Egyptian. Stop me before I go too far to show how stupid we have been to subscribe to that so-called (biblical) farce that was concocted right before, or behind our "big Armenian noses" :) Is it not time we wrote our own "bible", of us, by us and for us? But I'am still a bit confused (aspeciale after the secund reply ), could you be more specific Arpa, So what you actually say is that the name Yeghishe is not from the hebruw name Elijah, but form Elishah??
