So how do you correctly transliterate from the Armenian Alphabet to the Latin one???

 

Do you simply replace a certain armenian letter with the corresponding one in latin (as in the one in the same position, order)??? What happens after the 26th Latin letter??? How about Խ, Շ, Ղ, Ծ, etc????

 

What about the standards adpopted by the Armenian Government, also know as "ArmSCII AST-34.007-98 - Transliteration Into Latin Characters"??? (attached)

 

Αα (Alpha) - Aa (Ay) - Աա (Ayb)

Ββ (Beta) - Bb (Bee) - Բբ (Ben)

Γγ (Gamma) - Cc (Cee) - Գգ (Gim)

...

i don't think there is correct or incorrect way of doing it. i use phonetics of english and some physical similarities, such & for Ճ and @ for Ը.

Alpha - A - Ayp

Beta - B - Pen

Gamma - C - Kim

...

i don't see the need for one (standard) in practical sense off-line, and now with the development of unicode even on-line.

 

well... maybe there should be one just for being one. but i don't see any practical use or necessity for it.

Take it from an odar trying to learn the language, some sort of standardization would be a good thing I think. I mean it's tough to understand always what style people are using to transliterate, and many Hyes don't use any one style deliberate, many times switching back and forth mid sentence or paragraph.

 

I would say for class, teaching and utility purposes it might help to have a more concrete set of transliteration. I agree with the above poster that off-line it's pointless and even with unicode now getting better it might not be needed. But for those of us trying to appreciate the language from the outside, a latin based form for phonetic ease if anything is helpful.

 

I personally have learned the aybuben from the beginning in an attempt to learn as "purely" as possible, but as a self-fashioned linguist I do realize the boons of have a latin based form for foreign languages in the beginning.
