http://www.armenialiberty.org/images/photo/airport-deal.jpg By Hrach Melkumian An Argentine billionaire of Armenian origin, Eduardo Eurnekian, signed on Monday an agreement with the Armenian government giving him control of Yerevan’s Zvartnots international airport for the next 50 years. Eurnekian’s Aerpouertos Argentina group, which runs 33 airports across South America, will invest at least $50 million to bring the Soviet-era facility into conformity international standards. The company will build a new modern airport terminal within the next three years that will handle the bulk of flights to and from Armenia. Under the terms of the concession agreement signed by Eurnekian and Prime Minister Andranik Markarian, Aerpouertos Argentina will also expand Zvartnots’s runway and upgrade other airport facilities. “Our goal is not only to construct a good airport but also ensure high quality services there,” Eurnekian said at the signing ceremony in President Robert Kocharian’s official residence. “We are interested in having an airport that meets all international standards,” Kocharian said. According to Justice Minister David Harutiunian, Argentine investments in Zvartnots could reach $80 in the next ten to fifteen years. Its existing main terminal was built in 1981 and handled more than 550,000 passengers last year. The new operator wants to increase the number by five percent each year. Zvartnots will technically remain state-owned despite being run by a foreign company. Tentative agreement on the transfer of its management rights to the Argentine company was reached in late September. Eurnekian decided to go ahead with the deal despite a severe economic crisis in Argentina and a slump in the global aviation industry since the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States. Armenian officials say the long-term concession will make the entire aviation sector more efficient. They also hope that adequate airport infrastructure and services will make the country more attractive to foreign investors and tourists.

According to the Baku media reports the official leadership of the country inclines to accuse of the current situation the local right defending organizations that «air their dirty linen in public» as their reports state about hundreds of political prisoners in the country. According to «Echo» Baku newspaper reports the country's leadership think «if Azerbaijan is left without mandate at the session that is to take place 2002 January then the right defenders will bear responsibility. One of them, Leyla Yunusova, claims «she considers herself not guilty and thinks the expulsion of Azerbaijan is a right step». Right defender Mekhti Mekhtiyev thinks Azerbaijan will not be expelled from the European Council completely. CHINA IN NO CIRCUMSTANCES TOUCHES ISSUE ON STATUS IN ANY DOCUMENTS REGARDING Artsax 17.12.2001 /PanARMENIAN.Net/ People's Republic of China never touches the theme on Nagorno-Artsax's status, as it is a very complex problem. China's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Armenia Chju Chjaoshun has stated this to the «Arminfo» agency reporter. Commenting the statement of his colleague in Baku Chjan Gitsyan that «China supports Azerbaijan's territorial integrity», the Ambassador noted that the statements of diplomats, unfortunately, not always reveal the position of the government of People's Republic of China. The official Peking's view has been informed to Armenia's foreign ministry recently. The Ambassador has also noted that lately they have had to meet with canards that violate journalist ethics. According to the Ambassador, such reports are directed to worsen the relations of China with friendly Armenia. It should be reminded that recently Azerbaijan's defense ministry press service has stated «China does not recognize the legitimacy of the separatists in Nagorno-Artsax». AZERIS RESIDING IN GEORGIA COMPLAIN OF SCHEVARDNADZE TO ALIYEV 17.12.2001 /PanARMENIAN.Net/ Tension in connection with Mikael Mahmudov's claims for deputy mandate grows in the regions of Georgia that are inhabited by Azeris. After parliament deputy David Magradze abdicated responsibility, a candidate who follows him in the list of "Union of Citizens of Georgia" should take his place. Mahmudov was the next in the list presented to the central electoral commission three years ago. But it is known that the party leadership expelled him about a year ago. Nevertheless, the Azeris residing in Georgia claim deputy mandate for Mahmudov and threaten the central authorities with mass disobedience actions. One of the leaders of the Azeri community of Georgia Kamal Muradhanli expressed dissatisfaction with the official Baku position regarding the conflict burst out. In his words, "the official authorities behave as if everything is fine with Azeris in Georgia." "It vexes us very much, as if something happens to an Armenian, Kocharian appears on the television, takes some steps on the spot. But you can never await for Azeri leadership response to the happening with the compatriots in Georgia," – Muradhanli says. "Azerbaijan is indifferent about the fortune of the compatriots living in Georgia," – he concludes. Reproduction in full or in part is prohibited without reference to "PanARMENIAN.Net"

Rumsfeld told the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia that he endorsed action by the U.S. Congress to lift sanctions that bar some U.S. military relations with the two countries. In Georgia, criticized for not cracking down hard enough on terrorism, Rumsfeld said he discussed with President Eduard Shevardnadze "our desire to see that we cooperate fully with respect to the probe of terrorism." Shevardnadze, at a joint news conference, said he told Rumsfeld, "We must keep in mind that the sources feeding and fostering terrorism, such as nationalism and violent separatism, exist in the world." "Building a broad worldwide coalition to fight global terrorism is the highest priority in Georgia," Shevardnadze said. Rumsfeld was headed Sunday to Uzbekistan, home to some of the U.S troops used in Afghanistan. He then was to go to a NATO defense ministers meeting in Belgium. Rumsfeld said the Afghan and U.S. forces fighting al-Qaida around the Tora Bora region where Osama bin Laden is thought to be hiding were making good progress. "That's being done with the help of heavy bombing," said Rumsfeld, who noted that some al-Qaida forces were offering to give up. "The hope is the al-Qaida fighters in those caves and tunnels will surrender." The small countries Rumsfeld visited occupy a strategic spot next to Russia, the Middle East and Central Asia. All three have offered to let U.S. warplanes fly over their countries during the fighting in Afghanistan. American military planes have gassed up in Armenia on the way to the war front, a U.S. official said. U.S. officials were vague about what the United States might seek in the way of future military cooperation. "Stability in this region is as important to us as it is to you," Rumsfeld told Azerbaijan's president, Heydar Aliyev, at a meeting in the capitol Baku. "We are all concerned about the problems of terrorism, drug trafficking and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction." Georgia has faced criticism from neighboring Russia for not doing enough to crack down on Chechen separatists, whose base is inside Georgia. Russia has bombed Georgia to attack the Chechens, an action the United States has condemned. Chechens also have fought alongside Arabs in Afghanistan. Shevardnadze thanked the United States for already helping his country create a modern military and a force of border guards. Providing military aid to Armenia and Azerbaijan is a bit trickier. The United States imposed penalties against Azerbaijan in 1992. They prohibit any military cooperation because of the fighting between Azerbaijan and neighboring Armenia over the disputed region of Nagorno-Artsax, a predominantly ethnic Armenian enclave within Azerbaijan. Despite a 1994 cease-fire, there still is sporadic violence. The Bush administration has asked Congress for a waiver that would let President Bush offer military aid to Azerbaijan if that would contribute to the fight against terrorism or help the nation protect its borders. The sanctions also prevent military aid to Armenia, and Bush wants to lift that ban as well. Rumsfeld said he hoped Congress would approve the waiver soon, so the two nations could discuss what types of cooperation would he helpful. The fight over Nagorno-Artsax highlights the fact that although all three nations seek closer military ties with the United States, they face many disputes among themselves. Three-naved rectangular basilica in a plan is quite big. The two rows from eight squared abutment columns-pylons divide divide internal naves. The well-balanced, graceful, rotunda on the thin columns is crowned with the pyramidal marquee. It is situated on the hip-roof. The monumental basilica is made of solid stone and it blends well with rigorous mountain nature. The Agoglan monastery complex dates back to the IX century. Central temple and chapet of Khotavan cloiser The Hatavan Monastery Complex The complex is situated in the Vank village of Kelbadjar district. This complex consists of the basilica, the temple and the chapel. The basilica is a hall without internal columns. The eastern part of the hall is ended with the semicircular apse with sacristies on each side. The well - preserved cathedral was built by the Albanian tzar Ovanes Hachen. Hatavan became a Christian religion center of the Alban-Hachen principality from the X till the XV century. In 1214 Arzu Hatun the spouse of the albanian tzar Vahtang had built a church in a memory of her perished spouse and two son. The complex dates back to the IX century. The Amaras monastery complex The Amarass Monastery Complex The complex is situated in the Sos village of Hodjaven district. The complex consist of a church basilica, an underground part, dwelling and household buildings and stone fortress wall. In a plan, the church is rectangular. The internal space of a church is divided by four pylons that are situated two in row, on three naves are narrow. The central nave from the eastern side ends with the altar apse, which is covered with semi cupola. In 1970 during the archaeological inspection under the altar apse an underground lodging measuring 2*4 meters was discovered. It is overed by an arch and this floor is on a level of 5.2 meters bellow the church floor. Sources inform about the construction of this temple in the VI-VII century. The internal yard of the fortress is divided into two sides. The first one is a house holding yard, where service buildings and stables are located. The second part of the internal yard of the fortress is the church's yard, where the church is situated. The St. Yelisey Temple Complex The complex is located in Magavis village of Aqdereh district. A fortress of the complex has a very comfortable position and provides the strong defence and it is a typical for medieval Azerbaijan. On the territory of the fortress there are twelve buildings of different usage. There are a main temple, a chapel, a two - storied dwelling house, service buildings and stables. According the legend, the temple was built in the fourth century in honour of the first preacher of Christianity St. Yelisy in Albania. The main temple consist of two parts. The first one is a hall that has square form in a plan. The internal space is divided by two columns and the pylons into three equal naves and the entral nave is higher. They are covered by the cylindrical vaults. On the roof there is a steeple on the four columns. Second part of the main temple is a rectangular pray hall. They are six small chapels on the right and the left sides of the main temple. The complex dates from the XIV century. Gandzasar Monastery Complex The Gandzasar Monastery Complex The complex is situated in the Vanklu village of the Aqdereh district. The complex consists of the mainmonastery, the narthex and added to it from the west side some subsidiary buildings. The complex was built by Hachen prince Hasan Djalal in 1240. But it is supposed that Hasan didn’t built it. He just reconstructed an already existing temple. The narthex was built in 1265. The architecture of monastery is a cross-cupola composition. Its sources come from the VII-XI centuries. There are two prolonged rooms with the semicircular apse between them in the corner of the building. In the low corners of the building there are the choirs. The drum of the temple is round inside and it is composed of eight pairs thin semi columns - wips crossing suspension arches. The decoration of the drum has got a meaning, which is made by sculptural images. The architecture of the stalactite vault which is lean on the compound system of the tiered stalactites is the compositional main body of the narthex. This is a short architectural description of this five memorials of Caucasian Albania situated on the Artsax territory of Azerbaijan. It is known that Armenian scientist”falsifiers in every way possible try to prove that Caucasian Albania and all its architecture relate to historic Armenia. Their claims to albanian territories have no any scientific reason. Architectural planning and constructional methods of the monuments of Caucasian Albania differ a lot from the architectural monuments of Armenia. Albanian architects of Azerbaijan made their own Architectural - planning and building methods. They achieved a great perfection an carving. -=NEW SCHEMES FOR RESOLVING KARABAGH CONFLICT =- karabagh.org is maintained by Azeris Is Armenia really being blockaded by Azerbaijan? http://www.Artsax.org/ From the first days of undeclared war against the Azerbaijanian people the Armenian politicians and their supporters are juggling with the word “blockade”. The goal is simple: people living far away from the Caucasus, for example in Britain, France or the USA, naturally, are very poorly informed about the geography of our region and might not know anything about the details of the frontiers of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. Most important thing is that the term “blockade” sounds imposing, disquieting and provokes a favorable reaction with regard to those, who are allegedly in such a situation. Let’s first talk about the term itself. In difference to the Armenian interpretation, blockade is a military, political, economic isolation or encirclement of some given state. Pay attention, “isolation” or “encirclement”. Comparing these words with allegations that, ostensibly, Azerbaijan has imposed a blockade on Armenia, one can’t stop astonishing to what degree and how unceremoniously the Armenian experts on spreading the lies agitate the international public opinion. Unfortunately, so far they have succeeded. There are people on the earth, including experienced and influential politicians, parliamentarians, and congressmen responsible for the foreign relations of their states ,who without having investigated the essence of the events, by false evidence, try to solve the international problems. But a blockade against Armenia doesn’t and cannot exist. To get convinced in this simple truth you need only to take any political or physical map of Armenia, pay attention to its geographic location and frontiers and to find that Armenia is not located inside of Azerbaijan. Besides, Azerbaijan doesn’t have enough forces to control the Armenian borders from all sides. From about 2200 kilometers of the Armenia’s borderline, only 996 kilometers is the border with Azerbaijan. Furthermore, 225 kilometers of this border fall to the lot of the Nakhichevan AR of Azerbaijan, where partial blockade against the population of the autonomous republic is being carried out by Armenia itself. So, there is only 771 kilometers of Armenian borderline with Azerbaijan left, and it is ridiculous to consider it a circle, which would allow to isolate the whole Armenia. I would like to note that, presently, because of occupation of some bordering Azeri territories, this figure has also diminished considerably. To close all this vastness tightly, Azerbaijan would have to have a big army of professional alpinists, since most part of this territory is impassable mountains. Obviously, Azerbaijan doesn’t have such an army. Moreover, why Russia doesn’t complain to the blockade of its 7th army located in Armenia, and even introduces additional two divisions withdrawn from Germany to Armenia? From which “holes” is Armenia provided with millions of tons of energy supplies, raw materials, heavy arms, products and everything else? By air? No, mainly from Iran and partly from Georgia and Turkey. And it is clear to everyone but those who don’t tire themselves with elucidating the real picture and who credulously solve the problems of international politics based on the one-sided, biased information. It hurts, that the US Congress also makes such faults and by its unjust, pro-Armenian decisions greatly damages the solution of the Armeno-Azeri conflict, sheds water to the aggressor’s mill. For thousands times the “Washington Post” newspaper is right putting the following words in its publication on March 11: “The evil coming from the Congress and reflecting on the foreign policy of the country with regard to the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan is becoming clear”. It became especially clear after the decision of the Congress on deprivation of Azerbaijan from the humanitarian aid from the US government. This will, allegedly, continue as long as Azerbaijan stops its blockade against Armenia. But, dear congressmen, there is no blockade, it’s an invention, and you’ve been deceived. You can’t make a stern verdict based on distorted notion. Let’s call the things with their own names. Defending its territory from the aggressor, Azerbaijan imposes an ordinary ban and doesn’t allow transportation, through its territory, of the loads destined to the opposing warring party, the enemy that has occupied 20% of its territory. What are you proposing to us – to take off the ban? But it is an absurd! Would the US do that in a similar situation there in America? Does the US allow transporting strategic and other loads through its territory for Cuba, even if it is not a warring party? The answers are clear to any impartial person. It is quite obvious that the Armenian occupants need the myth about blockade in order to conceal their aggression in Azerbaijan. But what the congressmen, who drag in shameful decisions against the Azeri people want is unclear. Our purpose Welcome to the revised version of the Artsax.org website. Rumsfeld Sees Military Ties With Armenia After Freeze On Azeri Sanctions By Emil Danielyan US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld assured Armenian leaders on Saturday that the impending suspension of decade-long US sanctions against Azerbaijan will enable Washington to broaden military cooperation with Armenia. Rumsfeld, ending a brief visit to Yerevan as part a two-day tour of the South Caucasus states, said he had “very good discussions” with President Robert Kocharian and other Armenian officials on US military action in Afghanistan and ways of deepening bilateral defense ties. He held similar talks in Azerbaijan earlier in the day and in Georgia where he arrived late on Saturday. Rumsfeld and senior US officials on his aircraft told Western journalists on their way to the region that America is anxious to reward the three impoverished countries for their support in the US campaign. Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia granted the Pentagon use of their airspace shortly after the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. “We have discussed our respective roles and responsibilities with respect to the war on terrorism,” Rumsfeld told reporters after wrapping up the talks in Yerevan. “We also talked about the fact that we are both partners in the NATO Partnership for Peace program.” Speaking at the joint news conference, Armenian Defense Minister Serzh Sarkisian reaffirmed Yerevan’s support for the ongoing military campaign in Afghanistan. “We expressed our readiness to continue to support the anti-terror effort,” he said. In Rumsfeld’s words, the decision of the US Congress to allow President George Bush to waive Section 907 of the 1992 Freedom Support Act banning direct aid to Baku paves the way for American military assistance to Armenia. “We are expecting that the Congress will act on the waiver for Section 907 some time this week or next, and then our two countries will be able to proceed with the military-to-military relationship, which will be of benefit to both of us,” he said. The 1992 sanctions have also stymied Washington’s defense links with Armenia because of the unresolved conflict over Nagorno-Artsax. An amendment to the legislation agreed by a congressional “conference committee” last month allows Bush to freeze Section 907 if he deems US military ties will help the US war on terrorism and contribute to Azerbaijan's border security. Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliev said earlier on Saturday that the amendment will be a “very good Christmas present” for his mainly Muslim nation. He expressed disappointment that it has not already formally entered into force. “I was hoping that when you arrived you would say it had already been waived,” the 78-year-old leader told Rumsfeld, according to Agence France Presse. The US defense chief, for its part, was quoted by news agencies as expressing hope that the waiver “will be the beginning of improved cooperation between our two countries.” He also thanked Aliev for “the spontaneous concern and expression of support your country has offered to the war on terrorism.” According to Azerbaijan’s Defense Minister Safar Abiev, US and Azeri defense officials will be meeting in the coming weeks to thrash out what forms the new military cooperation would take. Similar discussions are also expected between US and Armenian officials. While in Yerevan, Rumsfeld also discussed use of $4.3 million in military assistance to Armenia allocated by Congress last month. US lawmakers earmarked the funds in an effort to address Armenian concerns over the lifting of Section 907. Sarkisian said the Armenian military would like to use the aid for training its personnel, modernizing its communication facilities and completing construction of a “de-mining center.” “I would agree with the Minister’s comments,” Rumsfeld replied when asked about the Pentagon’s view on how the American money should be used. As he headed for the South Caucasus Rumsfeld said Washington’s drive to forge closer defense links with the three ex-Soviet states reflects new geopolitical opportunities that have arisen since the September 11 terror attacks “I have said since September 11 that it was important to deal with that war on terrorism but also I have said the events since September 11 have shifted the priorities of an awful lot of countries of the world and their perspective about the United States and the problems of the world,” he said. “And it does offer an opportunity, it seems to me, to reconnect with these countries in this new circumstance. ...We believe we will be able to have military-to-military relations on a fresh basis soon.” -
"Happy Harry" Hadigian Passes Away LOS ANGELES—Few people can claim to be the father of broadcasting. But, Harry Hadigian was, indeed, just that—the father of Armenian-American broadcasting. Hadigian passed away Thursday. He was 71. Hadigian was born on August 7, 1920 in Jerusalem. He moved to the United States in 1948 and settled in Los Angeles. In 1956 he founded the Happy Harry Armenian Radio Hour on 1460 AM in LA, which has been broadcasting programs on weekends until today. Hadigian also ventured into television broadcasting. Albeit short-lived, he pioneered the concept of Armenian television, at a time when the Armenian press consisted of only newspapers/ When it began, the radio program was a source of news, music and community issues, bringing the community together, via a two-hour broadcast on weekends. "The program was his life," said Hadigian's daughter Siroon, the only relative "Happy Harry" left behind. "He started it, he loved it. That's what he wanted to do That's what he lived for," added Siroon. Harry Hadigian visited the Horizon Television offices Tuesday, to promote an event the radio show was hosting on Saturday. "I told him that Horizon would be happy to promote the event, since he had had such an immense contribution to Armenian broadcasting," said Ara Khachatourian, the programming director of Horizon TV. "We owe the concept of Armenian broadcasting to his initiatives," added Khachatourian. Funeral services will be held Monday, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Church, 17231 Sherman Way, Van Nuys. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.

FRESNO—Longtime Fresno County Supervisor and a past recipient of the Armenian National Committee Man of the Year award Deran Koligian passed away Tuesday. He was 74. Koligian spent most of his life in public service. From enlisting in the Army at 18, at which time he fought in the Philippines during World War II, to his tenure in Fresno Country Board of Supervisors, Koligian embodied the honest public servant persona and meticulously served his constituents. "The odds suggest we shall not soon see the likes of Deran Koligian in public life. The longtime Fresno County supervisor, who died Tuesday at the age of 74, embodied a rare set of skills and virtues. He was a bluntly honest farmer, a man of the soil who so deeply loved his roots he lived his entire life on his family's original 40-acre homestead. He was also a talented and shrewd politician, in the very best sense: clear about his philosophy and objectives, civil in his behavior and capable of inspired compromise when conditions demanded it," wrote the Fresno Bee in Koligian's obituary. After returning from war, he attended Fresno State University, while working and living at his family farm. Issues confronting local farmers was the impetus for his involvement in public office. After years of service in local school boards, Koligian was elected to the Fresno County Board of Supervisors in 1982, becoming the first Armenian-American to be elected to public office in the US. "Defending Valley agricultural lands against urban encroachment was among Koligian's most important principles. He almost single-handedly pushed Fresno's growth away from his district, mostly lying to the west of Freeway 99, and out to the northeast. He was immensely popular among farmers for his defense of agriculture. He wasn't able to stop westward sprawl completely—no one individual could — but it is only recently that significant residential development has taken place on his turf. Koligian was deeply opposed to the county using bonds to raise money for capital expenditures, arguing that it was fiscally irresponsible. He usually managed to persuade the rest of the board to support that position," wrote the Fresno Bee. Koligian was also torchbearer of issues of concern to the Armenian-American community. His involvement in various civic offices and his influence in political circles, ensured that Armenian concerns would be heard far outside of the Fresno County lines. For his service to the county, the community and the Armenian Cause, the San Joaquin Valley chapter of the Armenian National Committee named him Man of the Year and presented a special plaque honoring Koligian. "Deran Koligian was a powerful voice for the Armenian community. His contribution and commitment will be missed, but will serve as a life lesson for all of us who were fortunate enough to know him," said Apraham Saghdejian a member of the ANCA-WR Board of Directors.

$35,000 Raised for Samuelian by ANC-PAC GLENDALE—With the participation of several dozen supporters and friends at a fundraising event held on Wednesday, December 12, the Armenian National Committee-Political Action Committee raised $35,000 for Fresno area California State Assembly candidate and long time ANC activist Steve Samuelian. Samuelian, who is running as one of two Republican candidates in the 29th State Assembly district's primaries, has been a prominent figure in the Fresno community, the California Republican Party, as well as the statewide Armenian American community. A former District Director for Congressman George Radanovich (R-Mariposa), Samuelian has been an active presence in both American political circles, as well as a leader on Armenian American issues in Congress, including a number of Genocide resolutions introduced by Radanovich. The ANC-PAC event, which attracted a cross section of the Armenian American community, as well as a number of prominent guests, was held at Glendale's Kix Restaurant, where guests gathered to lend their support and assistance to Samuelian. All Republican organizations of the 29th State Assembly district, and a roster of prominent district have endorsed Samuelian's candidacy and statewide leaders are proud supporters of the candidate. The brief program featured remarks by ANC-PAC Executive Director Alex Sardar, as well as ANC activist and long-time Central Valley Armenian American leader Apo Saghdejian, who in his introduction of Samuelian, outlined the candidate's years of involvement in various organizations and community projects. Saghdejian praised Samuelian for his leadership on a number of key issues and total dedication to public service. Samuelian in his remarks thanked the guests and the ANC-PAC for their support and assistance on the campaign. He gave a brief overview of the latest issues and challenges facing the campaign and informed the audience that while he had the support of prominent groups and leaders, the road to victory would still be full of obstacles. He went on ensure that once elected to office issues of concern to the Armenian American community would not take a backseat to other issues. "I'm not going to shy away from taking on the issues that concern the Armenian American community of California," explained Samuelian. "You have given me your support tonight, and I want to come back to you next year and I want to hear that you have not been disappointed by supporting me," said Samuelian. Also present at the gathering were Samuelian family members, including the candidate's wife Houri. For more information on Samuelian for Assembly campaign, contact (559) 226-0604
