The General Assembly on Friday passed a non-binding resolution demanding the "immediate, complete and unconditional" withdrawal of all Armenian forces from Azerbaijan's territory in a vote in which more than 100 countries abstained. France, Russia and the United States voted against, arguing that as mediators they had to remain neutral. Four other countries also voted against the resolution, which was passed by 39 countries voting in favour. The Russian foreign ministry criticised the resolution in a statement issued Saturday, saying that its "basic principles ... meet only the interests of Azerbaijan." Kocharian’s political future has for months been the subject of speculation, with most local observers expecting him seek to retain a key role in government affairs after resigning as head of state. He has been specifically linked with the post of prime minister. Kocharian seemingly boosted his chances of landing the job by playing a crucial role in the suppression of opposition protests against the official results of last month’s disputed presidential election that gave victory to Sarkisian. Sarkisian quashed that speculation as he spent more than two hours answering questions from Armenians on national television. He said that had he and Kocharian really agreed to swap their positions they would have informed the nation about that in advance of the February 19 election. “If such a scenario had been possible, we would have announced this before the election the way Russian President Vladimir Putin and [President-elect] Dmitry Medvedev did,” he said. It won't affect Artsakh whatsoever. The sham called the UN has plenty of resolutions calling for Armenian withdrawals of so-called "azeri territory" (located outside the NKAO). The Minsk group rejected the bill so it's enough. I mean look at all the countries that vote FOR the bill. Most of the countries are in the Islamic conference, a conference where Armenia is seen in a negative light due to successful "azeri" propoganda and us paying no attention to it. The rest have their own national self-determination problems (such as Abkhazia, Transinesdr etc) Just the sheer number of absents and abstainments is a telling story.

Azeri Soldier ‘Escapes To Armenia’ An Azerbaijani soldier crossed into northeastern Armenia and surrendered to Armenian troops stationed there at the weekend, claiming to have been ill-treated by his commanders, the Defense Ministry in Yerevan said on Wednesday. According to the ministry spokesman, Colonel Seyran Shahsuvarian, Yaghub Mukhtarov, 19, told Armenian military officials that he decided to desert from his army unit in western Azerbaijan after being refused medical assistance and beaten up by its officers. Shahsuvarian said his body bore “numerous traces of severe beating.” The incident was reported just over a month after Armenia deported to an unnamed European country an Azerbaijani army conscript who had reportedly been taken prisoner in similar circumstances in December 2006. According to the Armenian military, Samir Mamedov claimed to have been systematically mistreated and humiliated by his comrades and asked not to be repatriated. Mamedov’s escape came the day after the repatriation of another Azerbaijani soldier who spent two weeks in Armenian captivity. The soldier, Vusal Garajayev, was convicted of high treason and sentenced him to 11 years in prison by a military court in Baku in May 2007. For its part, Azerbaijan released in late January an Armenian serviceman taken prisoner by Azerbaijani forces in August 2007 after deserting from his army unit deployed in Nagorno-Artsax. Azeri television said Armenians killed two Azeri citizens in the same area on Saturday. President Ilham Aliyev linked his comments to the newly-declared independence in Kosovo which he said had emboldened ethnic Armenian separatists in Nagorno-Artsax. Azerbaijan's parliament later voted to withdraw a 33-strong Azeri peacekeeping team that has been serving in Kosovo under NATO command since 1999. Former Soviet Azerbaijan has been trying to restore control over Nagorno-Artsax, where ethnic Armenian separatists threw off Azeri rule in the 1990s in a war that killed about 35,000 people. "We have been buying military machinery, airplanes and ammunition to be ready to liberate the occupied territories, and we are ready to do this," Mr. Aliyev was quoted as saying. He added the Nagorno-Artsax conflict with neighbouring Armenia could be resolved only on the principle of Azerbaijan's territorial integrity. The fragile peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia has held thanks to a ceasefire announced in May 1994 when large-scale hostilities ended.
