nairi
Steve, I think a bit of irony was to be expected. I mean really. If you (and your European compatriots) don't want Turkey in, then it's up to you to make sure of that. I think Armenians have protested and warned enough. I hardly doubt this protest action, another letter or another petition is going to make a difference.

MartyRoss
Martiros you dont have to demonstrate at all. The French are absolutely adamant in refusing to admit Turkey into the EU. If the opposite were the case then your demonstration would have made sense. The gods have cast their dice a long time ago and mortals like us won't make a difference. style_images/master/snapback.png Why are you underestimating us (yourself) like that ??? You think that it's by lowering our arms that we can advance things? Edited September 29, 2004 by MartyRoss

Protesting is a democratic right and we, in coutries such ours, can protest without any objection, so I think we have to protest every time we have an opportunity ! It's simply a duty, our duty. I hardly doubt this protest action, another letter or another petition is going to make a difference. style_images/master/snapback.png Sorry - my irony is resting at the moment (hell, I think the darn thing is in hybernation!) I agree that there is no point in advocating spurious conditions like "Genocide recognition". Turkey should not beccome a member of the EU because it membership would seriously damage the self-interest of Europe as a whole. As to how anyone in Europe can protest on those grounds, I don't know. This supposed EU "club" is a strange sort of club that can admit new "members" without any permision needed from current members. This is to do with the ruling elites in Europe doing what they want, regardless of what the vast majority of the population wants. That's why you should be concerned - It's an issue about who governs us / controls us, and not only about potentual Turkish membership. You can be sure that there will be masses of pro-Turkish propaganda produced by the EU should a "yes" to Turkish membership be close. I don't yet see that propaganda - so I don't think Turkish membership is close. Nairi, I am a bit puzzled by your use of the phrase "your European compatriots", since in my eyes you are as "European" as someone living anywhere in Europe. (And culturally, I'd bet you are more "European" than most). So I still don't get your sudden onset of hand-washing over issues that will be so important to Europe's future. Weren't you only a short while ago chiding someone else for constantly disparaging the culture of the country (America) he was living in, and saying how privilaged you felt to be living in a country with freedom like the Netherlands. I don't know what's changed with you since then, or why. Edited September 30, 2004 by bellthecat
nairi
Privileged only because there's nothing better out there... As for feeling or being European: you're not one unless the majority thinks you are. On paper I am, but to this day I am treated "differently" because I look different. People are afraid to speak bad about the Taliban in front of me, in case they'll insult me and my religion (???)! Again, a bit of (desperate) irony was to be expected. I can be concerned all I want with our rulers etc., but I'm not going to make that difference. You are in a much higher position to do so, if only because you are considered a European (unless you don't look like one!). Is there really nothing the people can do? If not, then let the leaders suffer for their stupidity. All Empires are bound to fall sooner or later. Hopefully Armenia will be the center of the world once again by the time this happens and you will be more than welcome to take refuge there Edited September 30, 2004 by nairi
