Compensation for lost properties in Turkey

All the former Communist countries have had to pass laws for compensation or return for the confiscated properties of their nationals. They have to do so in order to be admitted to the European Union.

Why does't EU make that stipulation as a condition to Turkeys joining the EU.

Does the question make you blood boil? I just saw a article which gave the amount of total losses by Armenians in Turkey to some 14 Billion French Franks? That amount is nothing by today's standards.I think the American government would gladly pay the bill just to shut people up and get on with the business of business.

Ah, so you think that if youm admit fault (like Germany) that you will have to allow people to return to Turkey? How many people do you think will return? One thousand?, ten thousand. I doubt it. You may have a few, less than a handfull. Human nature being what it is, we are all creatures of habbit. We married non Armenians, those chilldren will not move to the thirld world even for a good ideology.

Not making peace with the Armenians is another mistake in a long line of mistakes.

Wait untill you build the pipeline, and see how much oil will flow without our consent.

There are enough crazies that will blow it up no matter how well you guard it or what the Armenian government says. Will the Turkish army depopulate the pipeline route?

What about the Kurds? Will you kill the 20 million or so? All it takes is one tracer bullet to blow it up. How will you guard it in Georgia, or Chechnia? The only way to have peace is to buy it. And if you don't understand that than you don't understand life.

LOL... Edward, you have misunderstood the picture.

I think by referring to 14 billion francs, you are referring to the estimate presented by the Armenian Delegation to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 as compensation for the estimated loses resulted from the Genocide. That amount doesn't reflect the accrued interest rates, inflation, deflation, etc. The appropriately adjusted amount based on that estimate would be something that Turkey would be in no position whatsoever to settle, even if it sells its entire state property, I suspect.

You are right, the figure is fantastic, but I can assure you that if the Germans could mannage to pay off their debt to Israel, Russia and other displaced people, as completely distroyed as they were after the war, than surely the Armenian demands are nowhere near the Jewish ones. The total amount of Jewish losses was a phenominal amount next to ours. Besides, the American Government will pay for it. The American taxpayers have been bankrolling the Turkish economy for the last 50 years. The turks are accomplished beggars. They will allways find a boogeyman to scare the world with. It's that or no oil.

Good news. There is a legislator in the house who is quietly campaigning for a rapprochment qith Iran and Iraq. Why, Nothing else has worked so far. With Russia no longer the threat, and with Greece, Iran and Iraq pacified, why would we spend a dime on Turkey. Well, "Armenian terrorism" will be the thing. Turkey cannot encircle Armenia and cannot control every Armenian community in the diaspora. Even without state support, a handfull of Armenians wrecked havock on the Turkish diplomatic community. A few dead oil company executives, and watch then backing out of all the deals.Immagine the Surpazan ordering every Armenian to strike at Turkish targets, and the Armenian State training and financing Squads of Kamikaze fighters. last time the surpazan ordered the Armenian population into battle was at Bash Abaran and the Turks lost that battle. The scenario is mind numbing. Armenia has the ability to build an Atomic bomb. But why do it when we could probably buy all we wanted from disgruntled Russian soldiers. Am I advocating any of this stuff? No!! But life is life and war is war and there is no limit to human ability to suffer and create suffering. Even the Turkish population has a limited tollerance for suffering. They have seen a few years of economic expansion, I don't think they want to go back to tending goats for a living. They would rebell and topple the Government. After all of the above scenarios, and others I haven't thought of, paying the dam bill seems like the best Idea.
