I then looked it up and saw Armenia's population is estimated at 3,200,000. Of course this doesn't include the population in Karabagh and the diaspora. I think Iran's Armenian population is at about 250,000. There also must be about 1 million Armenians in California (90% of them in Glendale! katak!). By the way, I am surprised no one brought up the last census on this forum. There was a bit of a controversy among Iranians in the US whether they should just mark "Caucasian" or "other" and fill in "Iranian." This goes out to all the people who say I hate being Armenian: I marked "other" and filled in "Armenian" so take that and put it where the sun don't shine! I did not put "half" or anything else, just Armenian, because I figure we need all the points possible! Also, I am sure Turkey's Armenian population is much, much higher than the official 70,000. I have read and heard about the numerous closet Armenians, for instance on the Black Sea and in Van who still speak Turkish mixed with Armenian, and preserve some cryptic Christian practices, much like the Conversos (secret Jews) of Spain did after the expulsion. Guest Posted October 7, 2000 Report Share Posted October 7, 2000 I don't believe that there are onley 250000 Armenian Iranians, These numbers are announced by the Armenian clergy of Iran.According to them there are between 200000 and 300000 Iranian Armenians (they count probably onley those ones who are registered in a church in Iran itself. The Historic documents show that in the 17th century during the Shah abbas reign were more than 300000 (some speak of 330000) Armenians moved to Esfahan region and Gilan Region from the Armenian region (which is today part of Turkey). There were already large numbers of Armeniansin the Urmia region of Iran and in Tabriz. The fertility rates have been much higher than today. There have been assimilation and migration to Armenia under the Russians or Soviets, but according to statistics these were some 20000 persons after the second world war. Al these make that there should be logically much much more than 250000 Iranian Armenians. The popular believe is between two or three million, but at least one million should be a much logically builded estimation than 250000. I don't know if Armenia accepts dual citizenship. But in case of Armenian Iranians in America, they are legally stil Iranahay even if they have American citizenship (I think that the Armenian Iranian clergy in Iran don't agree with me ! ) Because Iran recognizes dual citizenship and noone can't be ex-patriated, even the persons who marry an Iranian are getting iranian nationality.
