Eastern Thought

This is the only thread in the forum I found about Deepak Chopra :P

Sasun, do you know him? He is interviewed in the "10 Questions" section in the TIME magazine (Jan. 24 issue). I found this interesting:

"TIME Should the deaths of more than 150,000 people from the tsunami affect our immage of God?

Deepak Chopra Actually, our immage of God is outmoded anyway, whether the tsunami occurs or not. Religion has become divisive, quarrelsome and idiotic. Religion is the reason we have all this conflict in the world. We have squeezed God into the volume of a body and the span of a lifetime; giving God a male identity, an ethnic background; made him a tribal chief and gone to war. Yet people are not ready to forsake their image of God.

TIMEWhy do you believe God is a woman?

Deepak Chopra I think God is more likely to be a woman because women are nurturing and caring and loving. The human male has become the most predatory animal on our planet. It's time that we embrace the feminine face of God.

Anoushik, I know a little about him. His books are quite popular. Usually when someone is too well known in the US I loose my interest. It is a crude filtering mechanism for me given the scarcity of time to read, so I haven't read anything significant from his books, just fragments. But from the little that I know - he is popularizing ancient Hindu meditation and healing practices, a good thing in my opinion.

As to the image of God in our minds, the just, fair and dispassionate God can be viewed as male, while compassionate, caring and merciful God can be viewed as female. On the other hand the Christian God is all of the above and yet is a Father, not Mother.

That's all subjective, one jacket is not for all sizes and tastes. Anyone can view God differently, the way they understand best. We can't possibly understand God fully in our mind anyway.

Yes, that's why people should be encouraged to view God and understand God as they understand Him instead of being pushed to believe a certain image of God. That's why I have lost my respect towards Christianity, because for centuries the Fatherly God has been prevalant and as a result the women's status has suffered. Let's not even mention other religions in this regard.
