CONFLICT BETWEEN ARMENIANS AND AJARIANS IN GEORGIAN REGION OF AKHALKALAKI

 

YEREVAN, MAY 4. ARMINFO. A conflict took place on May 2 in the Azmana village, Akhalkalaki region, Georgia, between the Ajarians of Azmana village and the Armenians of the neighboring village of Kartsep.

 

According to A-INFO, Ajarians purposely destructed the fishing pool of Kartsep resident Telman Bambukhchyan. The conflict resulted in a heavy injury of one Armenian. Besides, the owner of the pool received materials damage.

 

According to the source, the pool was destructed because one of the owner's relatives banned Ajarian children from fishing there. Later, rumors were spread that Armenians beat Ajarians. Soon, a quarrel started between the Armenians and Ajarians who came to help, which was stopped by the local police. According to Armenians of the region, Ajarians try to provoke ethnic conflict by their behavior

TBILISI, MAY 10, ARMINFO-BLACK SEA PRESS. About 10 persons were injured in fight in Tsalka in Tetritskaro region in East Georgia.

 

As Grigory Kherianov, Tsalka procurator, told BLACK SEA PRESS, the fight took place yesterday between groups of residents of Georgian and Armenian nationalities in result of quarrel because of football match between teams of the villages of Kizilchilis and Neokharaba. The injured have been already treated; none of them needs treatment in the hospital. Criminal proceedings have been instituted under Article 239 of the Criminal Code "Hooliganism".

 

The procurator said that the witnesses would have to answer some questions for identification of personalities of the initiators of the conflict. Medical expert examination of the injured will be also carried out.

About half are, or at least are nominally Muslim after 70 odd years of communism.

They are mostly descended from Muslim Abkhazians who migrated south when Russia conquered Abkhazia and then found themselves back within the Russian empire after 1877. (This is probably an oversimplification, but everything is an oversimplification where it concerns ethnicity in the Caucasus!)

They consider themselves Muslim Georgians. All things granted what Saakashvili did in Adjaria was brilliant. He has consolidated Georgian nationalism in one move. This was probably a necessary stepping stone in order to "solve" the minority problem. I wouldn't be too surprised if Saakashvili will go after the Armenians next, who are probably the easiest targets. This will not only prove very popular among Georgians, but will also help to do away with the nominal religious differences between the Christian and Muslim Georgians. He has started to take them out one by one but I wonder what will happen when he hits against the Russian wall in Abkhazia and Ossetia.

Good luck. Javakhktsis are even more stubborn than Artsakhtsis. Hundreds (thousands, actually, but that would imply something like 30,000 or something; more like 2,000) Javakhktsis went to Artsakh to fight the tachik; when the ceasefire was declared, they took back the weapons they had used. Hell, they stopped Shevardnadze and held him for a while when he was passing through the region.

 

The difference is that the Adjarians look at themselves as Georgians, whereas the Armenians simply don't. It's also not surprising that the ARF is as strong (perhaps even stronger) in Javakhk than it is in Artsakh.
