please help me. i can't stay connected to net more than 5 mins. it would definitly freeze within 5 mins.

i added a memory to it 2 weeks ago. could it be the reason? but it worked perfectly at first.

i hope it's not gonna freeze until i press the boton.

Garo jan, i scaned the comp with two different virus programs, McAfee and Norton. they didn't find any infection. i also ran scandisk couple of times. it didn't help either.

it only freezes when i get connected to the net, especially during a new page loading. everything stops. nothing respoces.

thanks.

it's the original modem that came with the comp.

this used to happen before too. i recovered the whole comp 2 times. during the first month or two everything is fine. but then it starts again. freezing.......

thanks

I'm sorry Harut but you're giving me too general information to diagnose your problems and it may take too long time to find out what's wrong with your computer.

There may be a lot of different reasons.

Try to find a person who has physical access to your computer or call the manufacturer if their warranty is not expired.

Sounds like you may have a buggy version of internet explorer, some of the early version 5s were like this, they did not release the memory when a new window was opened and then closed, so after a while you would run out of memory and your computer would freeze up. Try getting hold of another version and installing that.

Steve if IE is the problem it should give problems always. As Harut says after using recovery CD it works for a while. Also if the system runs out of memory Windows will give the Out of Memory warning message but Harut did't say anything about this kind of message. He needs to try both internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator to be sure what is the problem - the bowser or the system.

it doesn't give any warnings. it just freezes, and you never know when.

you're right about that memory thing. 2 months ago i didn't have any program that could open ***.jpeg files (pictures) and i used IE. after opening and closing about 10-15 pictures it would warn me about low memory.

but i don't think that's the problem because it heppens even if i use one window.

i'll try to find Netscape. do you know where to look for it, Garo?

my cousin says that it could the heat. he says it's hot and maybe the CPU gets overheated and crashes. he suggested to add an extra fan.

what do think about this?

thanks guys.

I am aware of a situation, where the fan was heating the computer instead of colling it. It was mounted into the computer in some opposite way. However, this would make the computer crash regardless of the IE. It would do so with all applications, or running no applications at all.

Harut jan, what kind of hardware do you have?

You say the memory capacity and viruses are not a problem. Did you install the memory yourself? If so, did you double check that you installed it correctly? If it is a PC then you can check your memory capacity by clicking on "my computer" EDIT menu then DETAILS. then Do you only have the Internet on at the time or different programs running? That can eat up a lot of volatile memory..watch out..

Garo is right. We can't give you too much help if we don't know your system and a little more about the problem. However,if you ask me I have a strong hunch it is a faulty modem problem. Especially if this was happenning before a lot, and ESPECIALLY if you have problems with your connection. It's what you said about it diconnecting every two minuites.

You can TRY downloading drivers from the internet but I always find this to be dodgy because there isnt proper backup or help for problems(OR they'd be too technical for a normal human being to understand) plus you can pick up all types of viruses. To be honest all the correct software should have come with the computer when you bought it. Go to the people you bought the computer from, take your receipt, and ask them to check for you if it is faulty. They should be more than happy to do that for you. If they find it is you can get a refund or a replacement. They can give you a better diagnosis of the problem, or direct you to someone who knows.

I hope this helps..

Yes MJ, I thought that too, that it would crash at any time.

Kazza

I use HP computer with Pentium 3 processor and windows 98. the memory was 63MB (strange) before I added another 64MB. I think it works because it says 127MB in the property of My Computer.

I try to avoid using other programs when I’m online. There are only 3-4 system things and the virus program open. I check it in the “msconfig” thing. Also the percentages in the resource meter are in the 80s.

It doesn’t disconnect at all. It just freezes. Nothing responses. The cursor doesn’t move.

I also think it’s the modem, but would it freeze the computer or would disconnect?

I bought the computer more than a year ago form Fry’s electronics. They gave warranty for one month only. So, I don’t think they would do anything about this.

I will get Netscape and new drivers for modem and will post the new results.

Thank you.

This was my fifth attempt to post this. It froze already 4 times before, while I was trying to write this message. I’m soooooo angry.

The connection speed depends on some other factors as well - phone line condition, how many devices are connected on your line and so on. The 115,000 is a result of incorrect connection speed detecting I think. I've noticed it happens with some areas. If I connect using modem from my home it always shows the same. But the actual speed is the same.

Your computer has manufacturer's guarantee as well and usually it is at least one year so try to contact HP tech support. Also on their web site you may find a lot of software updates for your computer. Visit http://hp.com for more information.
Netscape navigator is available at http://netscape.com/download. I'd suggest to download the version Netscape Communicator - 4.77 not the 6.01.
46,667bps is normal for 56k.

i just downloaded and currently using Opera 5. it's preaty fast browser. i couldn't find the version of Netscape Garo suggested. they have the name but not the file for download.

so far this one is working great. giving no problems.

do you know anything about Opera 5?

what are its good things, bad things?

with this browser everything seem different. the fonts, the images, the tables......

i reinstalled the modem drivers from the recovery disk that came with the comp. it didn't help. it was the same thing.

i'll post the results of this browser later.

i hope they will be positive.

I, too, have Netscape 6 and Opera 5.

Netscape 6 takes long time to start, though. Don't know why or what.

Opera 5 - true, it is fast as hell, and disabling images is very easy compared to the other browsers', in which, I'm sure, I'd get lost, trying to find my way. Everything is one-touch easy. Very key-board oriented, which I adore, since I despise this thing they call a "mouse"...

One disadvantage is that it does not seem to recognize a lot of HTML coding, from what I can compare. Writing that is supposed to be centered or bold can come out plain... I don't know how that compares with the way the coding can be physical or logical, but that's the way it is.

Another thing; I visit the Network54 boards a lot and have two of my own. Your Network54 login has the option of using WYSIWYG, if you wish it. It works with IE, but if you switch to Netscape, Netscape does not recognize this (or this was so in the earlier versions - might check but do not care to) and proceeds as though you do not have this feature enabled. The thing with Opera is that it seems to recognize the tool bar put above the message field, but it will not allow you to type in the message field at all. That's a drag. That is one example, and the same thing happens with my kahkaha.com mail if I have HTML enabled.

I never tried it with IE and Netscape, but I know that you can log in to different Net54 logins AND mail accounts at the same time, such that I can check two different e-mail accounts from Yahoo, this when I am using IE and Opera. I might think of trying to experiment in the same way with IE and Netscape, but Netscape is currently configured to be IP-randomized, and I am too lazy to go back and enable cookies and the whole load of garbage under "preferences."

Does that help?

Harut the link to Netscape 4.7 is here. Just follow the instructions. It may take a while to download. The problem with Opera is that it doesn't support some specifications like style sheets which is in use by many web sites to build their pages. For simple HTML sites it works good.

Garo,

i've been on the page you gave me.

but did you try to click on "download"?

it doesn't work. the file is not available, i guess.

i tried other sites but all of them lead to there. so i couldn't get it.

i've tried Netscape 6 once before, but it didn't work correctly.

this Opera 5 doesn't give any problems at all. you're right it's kind of not proffesional, doesn't have everything i need to surf the net.

but i sent a whole day already online without even a single crash. the problem was with IE, i guess.
