Eastern Armenian - Asking To Marry?

Du indz het kamousnanas?

What do you think Arpa?

Good Day!!! :)

Very good Acher!

First a story.

The entire clan calls on their neighbor to ask the hand of the young lady for their son. As is the Armenian custom, they all speak together, chit chat, small talk, about the weather, about business, politics, and of course girlie talk. Coffee after coffee, reading of cups. Hours pass, still no hint what the visit is about. The boys grandfather, the patriarch of the clan grows impatient and finally he asks if he can say something. Everybody quiets down and he speaks.

"Look", he says, "we have wasted all of two hours, now it is time to tell you the purpose of our visit". (Of course he uses more picturesque language). "Will you let our handsome son make love to your beautiful daughter?". :) :) Amot!

Indz amousin k@ lines?

Will you be my spouse?

In general in the Armenian "amousin" is used to mean the male spouse but in fact it is of neutral gender just like the English "spouse". While at the same time it infers marriage "amousnutyun".

A more direct approach;

Ari psakvenq=Come, let us wed.

I thought that was more of suggestion rather than question. (Isn’t it?) I know I myself have never heard anyone use “du indz het kamousnanas” but I guess if you directly translate it from “will you marry me?” that’s what you would come out with.

By the way, I enjoyed reading your little story that was funny :lol: :lol: (Amot Arpain) :rolleyes:

Good Day!!! :)
