Whatever happened to the casinos and other dens of inequity that were popping up on every block of Yerevan a few years ago? And now it is cafes. At this rate there will a cafe for every inhabitant of Yerevan Province. Who patronizes these cafes? Do they serve coffee? How could one tell masked by all that cigarette smoke? How much time do locals have? How much cash do they have? How do these cafes stay in business? As a rule cafes are crashing pads for those who have nothing else to do but crash, and by this rule, those who have no cash. Yet the Trash and Cash keep on marching. Is this an emulation of the west? Which west? What will be next? A billboard advertaising the virtues of "Madame Pornikian's House" at the approaches to Ejmiatsin? The caption of a photo of Mashtots Avenue. The dramatic view of the strategically placed Matenadaran (manuscript library) at the end of Mashtots Avenue will soon be just a memory.
