I thought Sean Penn winning was cool and I was happy that LOTR did well. Overall I don't care much for these things, I have never really watched more than 15 minutes of any award show. Somehow the dramatic acting of Frodo, Sam and Aragorn couldn't convince me, it all seemed so fake to me. Plus the first half was still Two Towers, which they could have done in the second movie if they hadn't filled that with mindless and needless stuff that Peter Jackson made up for the sake of commerce. I hope everyone at the Academy gets attacked by giant alien fire ants! I can think of a much worse fate for (most of) them - force them to watch their own crap! - over and over untill they pull their own eyes out! Accelerated Posted March 2, 2004 Report Share Posted March 2, 2004 as for LOTR, the only good things were the battle scenes and other special effects -some of the acting was awful, particularly Frodo and the story could have been compressed into one movie or two 2-hour length movies, saving us from the butt-numbing bore-a-thon we were subjected to through 75% of the trilogy. As to the rest of the show.... eh ... I guess the Blake Edwards stunt was kinda cool. I also liked Jim Carey's impressions of Clouseau. Mystic River, Seabiscuit and Monster were tolerable enough to kill some time, but they can hardly be considered masterpieces. But nominating Master and Commander: The Far Side Of The World for best picture and Johnny Depp for his brilliant, brilliant role in the in The Pirates of the Caribbean is plain crack. If Jude Law's stupefying lull in Cold Mountain is considered acting, why didn't they nominate that actor in The Thin Red Line. At least his acting was much more visceral and shows that you don't just need words to act. No offense, but the LOTR trilogy must be the biggest farce in movie history. Their sweeping the awards was no particular suprise it was just giving the masses what they want. It's a clever attempt of a B-movie being clad in costly special effects and make-up in order to bore you to death. J.R.R. Tolkien must be rotting in his grave right now. There is no place for more independent minded movies like In America, City of God or The House of Sand and Fog in the Oscars unless they toe the line. They should be thankful (or embarrassed?) enough that they were nominated in the first place. What sets the Oscars apart besides its hype and visibility from all the rest (Cannes and Berlin, etc.), is that it is a showcase for OTC pictures. It's actually no different than your local farm fair where instead major movie companies and people like the Weinstein brothers market their "produce" to Academy members and try to woo them with private screenings and dining them in the finest restaurants.
