vava
You know TB, I was wondering about this! A friend gave me a package as a gift - 'oh, I got you some Armenian Paper'... I had never heard of Armenian Paper, much less ever seen/used it burning in anyone's home... So, any of you hear of this? Is it true? Is it really Armenian in origin? vava
I have to tell you this morning when I first read this thread I was surprised as well as I too have never heard of such a thing. Whew - what a relief... I was seriously doubting my Armenian-ness... I mean, I hadn't even heard that we have our own paper!
Twilight Bark
You know TB, I was wondering about this! A friend gave me a package as a gift - 'oh, I got you some Armenian Paper'... I had never heard of Armenian Paper, much less ever seen/used it burning in anyone's home... So, any of you hear of this? Is it true? Is it really Armenian in origin? No, I don't think any of us would have heard of the "Armenian Paper" from family. I learned of its existence from an ad in a French magazine. The "history" section of the site claims that Auguste Ponsot saw Armenians burn "Benjoin" (Benzoin; or Stryax tonkinensis), a resin from some far eastern plant. Whatever the truth of the story, the paper is a French "invention", and the source plant is not native to Armenia. So it is fair to say that the only Armenian thing about Papier d'Armenie is that some Armenian(s) somewhere in Ottoman Armenia inspired a Frenchman (Henri Rivier) to come up with it. In any case, we'll take the credit anyway.

Manufactured in Paris since 1885. http://papierdarmenie.siteinternet.com/site/triple/images/tripMain.jpg
