Yervant1
Armenpress.am We still haven’t been able to make decision on CSTO reaction to Azeri aggression, Pashinyan tells allies at summit SaveShare 16:58, 23 November 2022YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 23, ARMENPRESS. In the past two years CSTO-member Armenia was subjected to aggression by Azerbaijan at least three times, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan said in his speech during the CSTO summit in Yerevan. “It is regrettable that Armenia’s membership to the CSTO did not restrain Azerbaijan from resorting to aggressive actions, and furthermore, basically up to this day we were unable to make a decision regarding the CSTO’s response to Azerbaijan’s aggression against Armenia. These facts are greatly harming the CSTO’s reputation both inside and outside of Armenia, and I consider this to be the main failure of Armenia’s presidency in the CSTO. I can say the same about the escalation of the situation on the border of our allies Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. At the same time I have to mention our successful actions. I mean the swift reaction of the CSTO to Kazakh President Mr. Tokayev’s request in January of this year to assist in restoring law and order in their country. In this case we resolved the issue overnight, which helped Kazakhstan avoid a domestic chaos,” Pashinyan said. The Armenian Prime Minister took the opportunity to congratulate Tokayev on his re-election as President of Kazakhstan. “Friends, the agenda of today’s meeting is full. I hope that we will succeed in agreeing our allied approaches and reaching coordinated collective partnership over relevant issues,” Pashinyan said. https://armenpress.am/eng/news/1097977.html?fbclid=IwAR11dOAebGaWTqObz3EtncUuj7_z3Pc08KX_J8QHcbgbf9jmkuMdDoXJB0c
Yervant1
Nov 23 2202 "It's time to stop Armenian-Russian military cooperation." Opinion JAMnews Yerevan Armenia and the CSTO “In order to receive weapons with modern Western technology, Armenia must break ties with the CSTO [a military bloc operating under the leadership of Russia] and Russia,” Hrachya Arzumanyan, a political scientist and expert on military and national security, believes. In his opinion, in the current geopolitical conditions, this path is inevitable, and he believes that after the taking this step Armenia will receive weapons from the United States and France. A day before the CSTO summit in Yerevan, the political scientist presented his view on Armenian-Russian relations, the expediency of membership in the CSTO, Armenia’s to reform the army and establish new military partnerships. Putin going to Yerevan for CSTO session: what to expect? “Staying with Russia is a greater risk for Armenia than alliance with the US.” Opinion “Pro-Russian opposition to Armenia harms Russia’s image.” Opinion “No need to expect anything from Putin” According to Arzumanyan, there is no need to have any hopes or expect fulfillment of obligations from Russia and the CSTO military bloc, because this is “the last stage, this page should be closed.” Arzumanyan believes that while during the Karabakh war of 2020 Moscow did not want to help Armenia, today it no longer has the capacity. On November 23, Yerevan will host a meeting of the CSTO Collective Security Council. Russian President Vladimir Putin will also take part. Among other issues, it is planned to discuss “joint measures to provide assistance to Armenia” regarding Azerbaijan’s recent incursion. A separate meeting between Putin and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is also expected. Why didn’t Moscow fulfill its contractual obligations? The reason, according to Arzumanyan, is that the national interests of Armenia and Russia not only do not coincide, but also contradict each other: “Russia, having calculated the situation, came to the conclusion that it should be on the side of Turkey and Azerbaijan, and not Armenia.” He says it is Moscow’s right to be guided by its own interest; it is only unclear why Armenia continues to treat Russia as an ally, when anti-Armenian approaches are clearly being articulated by the Russian Federation. Arzumanyan is confident that Azerbaijan would not have been able to achieve success in its military operations without Russia’s support. Unlike the Russian Federation, the interests of France and the United States coincide with the interests of Armenia. At the same time, Arzumanyan warns that one should not expect that this will always be the case. Fourth meeting with Putin: did Aliyev and Pashinyan hold their ground? Another trilateral statement was signed in which there are no significant decisions, so it seems that the negotiators have not made progress “Without emotion and without complaint” Arzumanyan advises the Armenian authorities to accept reality and form a new relationship with Russia, without unnecessary emotions, assessments, and senseless complaints. He says that he means the termination of military cooperation, which, if possible, should be separated from energy, economic, cultural and other ties: “It is necessary to understand that it is time to stop the Armenian-Russian military cooperation. And if it works out, then stop it in a normal, legislative field, without any enmity. If it does not work out, we must be ready for other developments.” “Armenia has the potential to create a 21st century army” According to Arzumanyan, an twentieth century army will again lead Armenia to defeat, and to create a modern army, it is necessary to break “all military ties” with Moscow: “Regardless of whether it be possible or not, Yerevan must choose this path. The question should be put not like this: are we changing our army, but like this: how do we change our army from the Soviet doctrine and make it modern. He believes that the country has the potential to move in this direction and that the experience of the Armenian military serving with the armies of Western countries is also useful. “Such a transformation requires a generational change, about fifteen years. But given the threats that we are facing now, we are forced to go this way as quickly as possible,” Arzumanyan said. "Stepanakert should prepare for negotiations with Baku" – comment from Yerevan In parallel with the rally, an extraordinary meeting was held in the parliament of the unrecognized NKR and a statement was adopted, the main message of which was “Artsakh will never be part of Azerbaijan” “You have to take the first step” Arzumanyan believes that Yerevan can change the army by the first steps: show state and political will and prove to the West, serious power centers that Armenia really wants to follow this path, announce withdrawal from the Russian Federation security system. According to Arzumanyan, if these steps are taken the country will receive political and military support from France and the United States. Armenian society is ready to make the final choice, and it remains for “the ruling forces to announce it.” Can India replace Russia? According to Arzumanyan the quality of Indian weapons, which Armenia is now trying to buy, is inferior to the Western, but Indian partners work with France and the United States, and “comply with their doctrine”: “The Indian army made the transition to the network doctrine of the West a long time ago, almost ten years ago. Making connections is the right thing to do. Armenia has no other way out at this stage.” Hrachya Arzumanyan believes that Armenia needs to use its limited potential and opportunities to establish ties with India and the countries of the Middle East. https://jam-news.net/its-time-to-stop-armenian-russian-military-cooperation-opinion/

Yervant1
Armenpress.am ‘EU Commission’s gas deal with Azerbaijan has destroyed a lot of trust in Armenia’ – MEP SaveShare 12:35, 29 November 2022YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 29, ARMENPRESS. German weekly newspaper Junge Freiheit has published an article about the attack of Azerbaijan against Armenia, the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, citing the statements of Members of the European Parliament that the EU Commission’s gas deal with Azerbaijan is a great mistake and has destroyed a lot of trust in Armenia. Author of the article Hinrich Rohbohm recalls that “in the night from September 12th to 13thof this year a conflict flared up again in the South Caucasus that is being forgotten in Europe in light of the atrocities of the Ukraine war. That night, Azerbaijan opened fire on its neighbor Armenia. Just over 100 Armenian soldiers were killed in the attack”, he said.Touching upon the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Hinrich Rohbohm stated that the Azerbaijani military shelled Armenia’s settlements, including the town of Goris in Syunik province this September. Artillery shells slammed into the roof of Edgar Salbun’s house. Rohbohm says “the Ukraine war is taking its toll on Russia”. “This is probably the reason why the conflict, which was frozen after the last war in 2020, has now broken out again”, he states. The author also makes a reference to the Yerablur Armenian military cemetery, stating that there are those who gave their lives in defense of their country in September, when it was invaded by Azerbaijan.“From the graves of the fallen soldiers, the view sweeps over to the mighty Mount Ararat, where, according to the Bible, Noah once landed with his ark after the Flood. The Christian faith is deeply rooted in the country, and the Armenian Apostolic Church is one of the oldest Christian denominations in the world”, he says.“Once Armenia, which existed already in the first millennium before Christ, extended over large parts of eastern Turkey, reached in its heyday from the Caspian Sea to the eastern Mediterranean. But even in ancient times, the country was sandwiched between two great empires, the Roman Empire in the west and the Persian Empire in the east. Today, the country has long lost its access to the sea and, encircled by totalitarian regimes, is trying to assert its sovereignty and its remaining territory”, the author of the article says. The article is also touching upon the recent visit of MEPs to Armenia. The delegation also included German lawmaker Lars Patrick Berg.“Germany has so far been very reluctant to get involved in the South Caucasus,” MEP Berg said. Yet the region, as a “link between Europe and Asia,” is of “geopolitical importance,” especially from an energy and trade perspective, he said. “The EU Commission’s gas deal with Azerbaijan has destroyed a lot of trust in Armenia,” Berg emphasized. His Dutch colleague Peter van Dalen from the European People’s Party (EPP) also sees it that way. “I think the gas deal with Azerbaijan is a momentous mistake.”Former European Parliament Vice President Fabio Massimo Castaldo of Italy’s Five Star Movement also calls for stronger EU efforts to resolve the conflict through diplomatic means. https://armenpress.am/eng/news/1098388.html?fbclid=IwAR1w0wuofPL8HRRhV9r8fsVg9euOCKMmoMKN59TZ5tNjUqSij1as1FQ_8nw
