Brussels summit was more substantive this time, says Deputy FM

YEREVAN, MAY 15, ARMENPRESS. The conversation in the May 14 trilateral Pashinyan-Aliyev-Michel talks in Brussels was more substantive, Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan said at a press conference.

President of the European Council Charles Michel said after the talks that there has been an understanding that further detainees would be released in the coming weeks.

Asked whether or not this means that the jailed Azeri soldiers who had trespassed into Armenia would get swapped with the Armenian captives held illegally in Azerbaijan, the Deputy FM said: “It was said very clearly, that there are many agreements on Armenian captives, and these agreements must be implemented. This was a direct message, and I don’t recall any mention of a swap. The call was simply about the previously reached agreements.”

Speaking about Michel’s mention of recognizing each other’s territorial integrity, the Armenian Deputy FM said that it refers to the borders that existed at the time of the Soviet Union’s collapse. “This is what it was about, and it is in line with the Almaty Declaration, he was simply reiterating that principle,” Hovhannisyan said at the press conference on Europe Day and the Armenia-EU relations.

The meeting was mostly aimed at achieving progress with concrete steps, Hovhannisyan added. “And the issues announced by the President of the European Council shows that the conversation was more substantive.”

YEREVAN, MAY 15, ARMENPRESS. Logistic chains of shipments are broken or not functioning since the events in Ukraine began. Many goods that used to be directly shipped to Russia are now being shipped there through Armenia, Kazakhstan and other countries, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told the Czech Respekt magazine in an interview when asked on the sanctions against Russia in context of the increase of Armenian exports to Russia.

“For example, drinks, which aren’t subject to sanctions, are no problem. Before February 2022 it was being shipped through Poland and Belarus, now they are shipped through Armenia. It’s not just about the change of routes, most of the European freight forwarders are refusing to directly cooperate with the Russian market. And Russian freight forwarders can’t deliver it to Poland. Thus, entirely new logistic routes were created, including through the territory of Armenia. But in terms of goods that are under sanctions we try to be maximally transparent, we cooperate with the EU, US, even with Russia itself. We are a member of the EEU and we have very close economic ties with Russia and Armenian businesses like to participate in the programs that were created in the recent period. We gladly meet the Russian demand wherever there is a vacant spot. Sanctions are our red lines. And we are clearly telling this to the Russians: we don’t want to hurt you, but we can’t afford to come under sanctions ourselves. There is no secret here,” the Armenian PM said.

Russia hasn’t delivered armaments which Armenia ordered, and paid for

YEREVAN, MAY 16, ARMENPRESS. The armaments bought from Russia haven’t been delivered to Armenia, the Deputy Foreign Minister Mnatsakan Safaryan said on May 16.

Speaking at a press conference, Safaryan was asked to comment on Secretary of the Security Council Armen Grigoryan’s recent statement that Armenia has ordered and paid for Russian armaments but Russia is not delivering them.

“Indeed, the armaments didn’t reach Armenia, and the works in this direction continue. I don’t have anything else to add regarding this statement,” Safaryan said.

Police receive report on attempted kidnapping of Prime Minister’s son

YEREVAN, MAY 17, ARMENPRESS. Police received a report on May 17 that an attempted kidnapping targeting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s son Ashot Pashinyan took place on Wednesday, a police spokesperson confirmed to ARMENPRESS.

“The police have received a report with that content. The documents will be sent to the Investigative Committee,” a police spokesperson told ARMENPRESS when asked to validate the newspaper reports.

The Armenian Times newspaper reported that Ashot Pashinyan suffered injuries in the attempted kidnapping.

The attempted kidnapping happened near Ashot Pashinyan’s residence in Yerevan, according to the report.

Ashot Pashinyan managed to escape.

According to the report, the kidnappers were members of an NGO called Call of Sons. They reportedly forced Ashot Pashinyan into their vehicle and drove off. At one point, when the vehicle stopped, the PM’s son jumped out of the vehicle and was hit by a car which was travelling behind, also belonging to members of the same organization.

Criminal case initiated for attempt to abduct Armenian PM’s son

YEREVAN, MAY 17, ARMENPRESS. The petition of Ashot Pashinyan, the son of the Prime Minister of Armenia, was submitted to the Investigative Committee of the Republic of ArmeniaA, ARMENPRESS reports, Gor Abrahamyan, press secretary of the Investigative Committee, wrote on his Facebook page.

On the basis of the petition, a criminal proceeding was initiated in the department of investigation of serious crimes of the Yerevan City Police Department under the features of Article 191, Part 2, Clause 1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia.

Urgent investigative actions are being carried out to find out the circumstances.

Later, Investigative Committee will make a statement.

Earlier, the Police received a report about the attempt to kidnap Ashot Pashinyan, the son of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Investigative Committee provides details about Ashot Pashinyan's abduction

YEREVAN, MAY 17, ARMENPRESS. Urgent actions are being taken within the framework of the criminal proceedings initiated by the investigative department of the Yerevan city of the Investigative Committee of Armenia, in order to find out the circumstances of the apparent kidnapping of a person, ARMENPRESS was informed from the Investigative Committee of Armenia.

“On May 17, 2023, Ashot Pashinyan reported about crime, stating that on the same day, May 17, around 12:47, he was walking across the street in front of the Court of Appeals on G. Nzhdehi Street to G. Nzhdeh square. Parents of soldiers killed during the 2020 war were standing in the courtyard of the Court of Appeal. When he had passed about 50 meters from them, they approached him walking quickly.

Approaching Ashot Pashinyan, one of them introduced herself as the mother of the fallen soldier, offered to sit in her car parked nearby, so that they could talk quietly. When he got into the car, the said woman unexpectedly drove it, saying that they would go a little further so as not to be disturbed.

The woman started talking about the 2020 war, territorial and human losses. Seeing that the latter is behaving inappropriately, exceeding the speed, in violation of the traffic rules, Ashot Pashinyan demanded to stop the car so that he can get off. The mentioned woman said that her son was taken and killed without asking her, she has nothing to lose, she can kill him, so she takes him to Yerablur without asking, where she will decide whether to let him free or not, based on her emotions.

Arriving at the supermarket near the "Tsereteli" intersection, taking advantage of the fact that the woman slowed down the speed of the car, he quickly opened the front right door of the car and threw himself out during the process.

Seconds after that, when he was already standing, a white Toyota hit him. Turning around, he noticed that the driver and passengers of the said car were the other parents standing near the court. Based on his safety, he immediately entered the territory of the supermarket," the message states.

A criminal case has been initiated. The woman is arrested.

Pashinyan Confirms Agreeing to Place Artsakh Under Azerbaijan’s Control

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addresses Council of Europe Summit in Reykjavik, Iceland on May 17

 

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan confirmed on Wednesday that during talks in Brussels on Sunday he pledged that Armenia recognizes Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, essentially agreeing to Artsakh being placed under Baku’s control.

“Three days ago, with the mediation of the President of the EU Council Charles Michel, we took one step further, emphasizing that Armenia recognizes Azerbaijan’s territory of 86,600 square kilometers and Azerbaijan recognizes Armenia territory of 29,800 square kilometers,” Pashinyan declared during remarks at the Council of Europe Summit being held in Reykjavik, Iceland.

After hosting talks between Pashinyan and President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, Michel summed up the talks in a statement saying that “the leaders confirmed their unequivocal commitment to the 1991 Almaty Declaration and the respective territorial integrity of Armenia (29,800 km2) and Azerbaijan (86,600 km2).”

Artsakh is part of the 86,600 square kilometers of Azerbaijan’s territory referenced in Michel’s announcement and Pashinyan’s statement on Wednesday.

Michel also referred to citizens of Artsakh as “Armenians living in the former Nagorno-Karabakh autonomous oblast,” a term describing Soviet-era Artsakh before it declared independence in 1991.

Since last year, Pashinyan and his Civil Contract party began to distance themselves from Artsakh’s independence and right to self-determination and advanced the notion of guaranteeing the security and rights of the Armenians living in “Nagorno-Karabakh,” dropping the word Artsakh from the government’s vernacular.

On the same day that Pashinyan made the statements in Reykjavik, Azerbaijani forces targeted Armenian military positions in the Gegharkunik Province, killing an Armenian soldiers and injuring a paramedic.

Pashinyan attempted to pivot from the point and called for an international fact-finding mission to the Lachin Corridor, which has been blockaded by Azerbaijan since December 12, despite an International Court of Justice order—which Baku has ignored—compelling Azerbaijan to ensure “unimpeded movement” along the road.

Neither the ICJ ruing nor Azerbaijan’s blockade of Artsakh or its incursion into Armenia’s sovereign territories were mentioned in Michel’s statement on Sunday.

“But as a result of the illegal blockade of the Lachin Corridor, the Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh have been under siege for five months and are facing a humanitarian crisis,” Pashinyan told the Reykjavik summit on Wednesday. “To send an international fact-finding mission to the Lachin Corridor and Nagorno Karabakh is of high priority today, and to start Baku-Stepanakert negotiations aimed at providing security and human rights for the Armenians in Nagorno Karabakh under the international mechanism is of vital importance.”

Pashinyan said that Yerevan is looking to the Council of Europe for assistance in addressing these issues, which he said “will promote democracy and stability in the South Caucasus.”

In what can only be described as a bizarre effort to rationalize the unacceptable decision to relinquish Artsakh’s independence and self-determination, Pashinyan told the European leaders gathered in Iceland that the un-resolved Nagorno-Karabakh conflict somehow hindered the development of democracy in Armenia, and that though the 2018 popular movement he ushered in “democratic developments in the country.”

He said that his government has chosen the path of democracy and peace, despite which, he told the Reykjavik gathering, Azerbaijan invaded the Armenia’s territory first in May 2021.

“In November 2021 and September 2022 Azerbaijan again invaded the territory of Armenia. On October 6, 2022 with support of the French President Macron and President of EU Council Michel, we reached an agreement with the President of Azerbaijan that we normalize our relations on the basis of the 1991 Almaty Declaration, according to which the administrative borders of the former Soviet Armenia and Soviet Azerbaijan would become our state borders,” said Pashinyan.
