Egypt's Shirley Temple dies at age 72

Fairouz was of Armenian origin and starred in numerous classic films

Cairo: Actress Fairouz, Egypt's most famous child star of all time
died Saturday in Cairo, the state Middle East News Agency reported.
She was 72.

Fairouz had suffered liver and kidney problems in recent months, other
news reports said.

Minister of Culture Helmi Al Namnam paid a tribute to Fairouz.

`She deserved the title `The Miracle Child' due to her art and
creativity,' the official said in a statement. `I extend sincere
condolences to her family and fans of the late actress.'

Born Perouz Artin Kalfayan, Fairouz started her career at the age of
seven when she played the title role in the 1950 film `Yasmin'
co-starring iconic actor Anwar Wajdi.

A year later, she starred in `The Lady Fairouz'. She soared to further
renown when she portrayed the title character in the 1953 musical
`Dahab' also featuring Wajdi.

As a teenager, Fairouz performed in several films, some of them
featured Egypt's legendary comedian Esmail Yassin. Fairouz's last film
was released in 1959. Afterwards, she quit acting and later married
actor Badr Eddin Jamjum. She had since stayed away from limelights.

As a child actress Fairouz, who was of Armenian origin, also displayed
skills in dancing and singing.

Her talents earned her several titles including Egypt's Shirley
Temple. Her black-and-white films continue to impress audience of
different ages when they are re-run on Egyptian and Arab television
stations. She is the sister of celebrated actress Nelly.

Fairouz is survived by a son and a daughter.
