Armenia Rejects Turkish Role

YEREVAN (Agence France Presse)--Armenian politicians rejected US suggestions that Turkey could help settle the 12-year conflict over Nagorno-Artsax by helping the region mount an economic recovery, insisting that Ankara cannot be objective towards Armenia. The politicians expressed that Turkey has not shown a neutral policy in the region during recent years, and under those conditions it could not play a positive role in reaching a settlement.

US Ambassador Carey Cavanaugh, one of three co-chairs from the OSCE Minsk Group said that Turkish firms could help reconstruct areas destroyed during the war between ethnic Armenians from Nagorno-Artsax and Azerbaijan. Moreover, he declared that Turkey would be a key player in implementing any peace settlement in the region..

Relations between Turkey and Armenia are tense over Yerevan's demands that the massacres carried out between 1915 and 1917 under the Ottoman empire be considered a genocide. Furthermore, Turkey has repeatedly backed Baku in the conflict with ethnic Armenians in Nagorno-Artsax.

The Armenian foreign ministry said earlier this week that Turkey must change its policy towards Armenia and Azerbaijan before it can hope to play a role in the peace process.
