bellthecat
At least the divorce was amicable enough for them not to cut the coin in half! A coin for sale on ebay. - for those viewing this after the auction has ended - it was for a Turkish gold coin from 1835, given by the father in law of someone on that someone's wedding. Quote "Not a whole load I cay say other than I offer this as seen in the pictures: with the description on the card supplied with it by deceased father-in-law on the occasion of my marriage to his daughter (big mistake and the reason I now have to sell it. Watch this space for my 27yr old Mercedes next)! Father-in-law was a highly educated, multilingual surgeon in the USA and an Istanbul born Armenian with a huge interest in history. Me, I know nothing but I have had it valued. " Out of interest - is giving coins, or gold, or gold coins, at a wedding an Armenian custom? gamavor
I’ve heard that in the past it was fashionable to give as a wedding gift golden napoleons. At present, car (BMW 5 series), refrigerator (AEG), Philips surround system (DVD and everything else included). Disclaimer: Joke! But the part about napoleaons is true! bellthecat
It used to be, maybe still is (have not been to a wedding for ages), the custom in parts of Britain for the groom to throw a handful of coins into the street on leaving the church, which were then scambled for by a crowd of waiting children. But British coins have got way too heavy - you could do someone an injury if you threw a handful of 50p or £1 coins in the air!
