on a more serious note, what you said somehow touched me (why, i have no clue..lol)... you're right in many respects..

 

But first, I'll attempt (and the key word is "attempt" to paraphrase/translate into armenian the lovely contemplative article you wrote).. Forgive me if I don't do it justice...

 

The theme uniting his thoughts is the generally overrated superiority of the USA over other nations...moral superiority.. the american "hreshtak" (angel) image, which janfedayi cleverly presents as hresh`tak (hresh=monster in armenian)....

 

he speaks of the long lines which form daily in front of the u.s. embassy building in yerevan...chains formed of human links, bewitched by all the u.s. has to offer, eager to join their loved ones, lines of faces all desirous to come to this "great" country. Yet is it that great, he asks..when the u.s. purports to champion civil rights in other countries, what does it do for its own people? As JanFedayi would have it, the u.s. has been and is a hypocritical state, quick to react to alleged civil rights abuse when it's to its own advantage, and looking the other way when it's not...he brings up a story that made the news in armenia, when the u.s. ambassador beat up a little kid with a bat(?) when the boy tried to steal some apricots from his back yard. The story apparently made headlines but was quickly hushed up. JanFedayi contrasts it with the 5 month long coverage the Elian Gonzalez story got in the u.s. He suggests the same would have happened in the u.s. if the story was about a black child (when no one will point fingers) but is very different when the story is about a boy who personifies so much of u.s. foreign policy (elian)...

 

some commentary on my part: yes, the u.s. tends to be hypocritical in its policy, both foreign and domestic...but what government isn't, ladies and gentlemen? this is not a justification of u.s. policy, but rather a realistic statement made by a cynical 4th year political science major )..

 

my apologies once again, janfedayi, for basically "killing" your beautiful piece; perhaps someone can do a better job.. i certainly hope so )

Well here I am coming to the defense of my dad's country. Yes Jan Fedayi, the United States has done some rotten things. In fact, many rotten things. I am the first to say so. My own great-great grandfather was an American Indian, so I know what I am talking about. His tribe was forcibly removed from Alabama to Oklahoma.

 

But just as many of you come on this forum to attack me when I dare criticize Armenia, telling me "who the hell are you?" I will pose the same question to you, "Who the hell are you?" America is not perfect, but it still offers people more freedom and opportunities than most other countries. You wish that Armenia could have the prosperity and freedom that is found in the U.S.A! Enough of the U.S bashing already! Kherik!
