Armenians Today

Does anyone think that people (mostly teens) in Armenia are trying too hard to look and behave like Europeans? Even if they've never been to Europe?

They learn from TV...

Is it good or bad?

And sometimes (normal) girls dress like h**s and you just can't tell the difference...

keep in mind that I have never been to Armenia but I think I understand what you are saying ... I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. It's just how things change I guess ... The ancient egyptians started papyrus and such and the world followed ... the chinese did a whole bunch of stuff ... then the persians, greeks, romans, etc all influenced the world in some sense ...

Of course now with the age of communication and technology things happen much much faster (i.e. geography isnt' as big a factor in keeping things the same). There is NO denying that we live in a changing world and that geographical boundaries are coming down at a rapid rate.

The question is, how do we adapt and move on :) ... no, I don't think it's a bad thing.

I was in Armenia just over a month ago. I dont see a problem with younger women (older teens) following fashion trends, but sometimes it is pretty bad, with 10-14 year olds wearing 'revealing' clothes and they havnt reached puberty yet . Armenia really is a land of contrasts.

For a (funny and) insightful/interesting take on Turks being Europeans (or not) etc - I recommend checking out the book : "A Fez of the Heart" - well worth it if one has any interest at all in the modernity (or not) of the Turks. One thing to also remember is that there is often a big difference among Turks - urban - rural - and regional differences...there is a great mix of attitudes/values and such from very old world (and thats not neceissarilly bad) - to as "modern" (in outlook/life etc) as any of us (and I daresay more so then many of us - LOL)

Gamavor,

"The pot calling the kettle black." Gams, you are a racist bastard. Unfortunately for you, Armenians also have Mongol genes from the Armenian nobles in Giligia who married into the Mongol hierarchy, the Mongols who converted to Armenian Christianity and also the impregnation of our women by Mongol soldiers. Throw into that equation the genes of the Chinese emperor's sons who started the illustrious Mamikonian clan and what you have is Armenians also being a Mongol/Chinese mix. The jokes is on YOU, Gamavor

i don't think it's bad. and this isn't a new thing either. (many) Armenian teenagers have always (well, at least during last 50 years) tried to look and behave like Europeans. actually, i would not call it "trying to look and behave like Europeans", but rather "trying to look and behave the way that is 'cool' and in mode".

the difference is that these days there is more (though not enough) freedom of expression, that news reach Armenia much faster, and that some have the means to afford those new things.

Caucasian,

Certainly i do need to imporve my English, but the topic here is about Armenians of today. All of a suden you devulge the topic into Turks of today. If you have an oppinion about Armenians of today please do not hesitate to share it with us. I'm most interested to learn about Armenians of today in Turkey. Showing your belly and acting as a pimp, hardly could serve as a testimony for acceptance of European values, which we all know are not that appretiated in this so-called Republic of Turkey.

I was at the mall shopping the other day and I saw a young girl about 12 with her mother and older sister. This mere child was wearing shorts that were very, very short and a halter top that covered what little she had up there. I do not understand why the mother was not concernd about this. If this girl of 12 went to school or the playground like his, there is a good chance some 16 year-old boy would jump her bones.

Gamavor,

You are reverting to what Baliozian calls a typical Armenian response. I believe that the Mother is to blame. Are you so old that you do not remember the hormones flowing in a 16- year old? Why let your daughter prance around the mall with her naked behind showing to every person in sight? You are not a thinker Gamvor, but just like a Pavlov's dog. Any evangelist rings his bell and you salivate like a Pavlov's dog.

Moshe,

I wonder how you got your JD degree! First, you cannot blame the hormones. Hormones do not commit crimes. People do. The elements of guilt have nothing to do with DNA, genes etc., unless you are a follower of a very unpopular legal doctrine. Second. If you can hold responsible the mother of the 12 years old girl, why don't you apply the same principle to the 16 years old boy?

Nairi,

In a civilized society people are required to wear clothes. As a lark, I once went to a nudist camp. I could not concentrate on my reading. Society as we know it could not function if everyone walked around in the nude. As it is, I can not concentrate at work when those young women flirt with me at work. Why they would flirt with an old man is beyond me. I guess they are fooled as to my chronological age.

if the mother doesn't allow it, the girl will do it behind her back anyway.

Well I think that a 12yr old girl in the US would go behind her mother's back. They start having boyfriends at a young age and have a baby at 13 or 14.

You don't really see teen pregnancy in Armenia, do you? There's no proper sex education at schools anyway.
