The gluttonous insects are breeding at an amazingly high speed andare destroying everything around them in an area of 6,000 hectares, including wheat, barley, potatoes, cabbage, beans and otheragricultural crops. The asphalt road leading to Aparan, the region's administrativecenter, has turned pink from abounding insects. The Aparan region is actually in a state of emergency. Head of theagricultural and ecological department at the Aparan regionaladministration Aragatsotn Azatyan said on Thursday that the localfarms are sustaining colossal losses. The number of villages thathave fallen to the locust aggression is on the rise, he added. The Armenian government has allocated nearly 30,000 dollars for thepurchase of chemicals, which helicopters are going to spray over thefields to kill the locusts and rodents. Director of Armenia's plant protection service Mkrtich Danielyan saidthat the locust invasion had been caused by past mistakes. Theregional authorities failed to carry out the necessaryagro-technological measures in previous years, while a thick blanketof snow last winter stimulated the propagation of locust grubs.
