Z'areh
His Violin Concerto remains a favorite of mine, played by Oistrach or Itzhaak Pelrman. The Perlman version, with Israel Philharmonic, is a great recording and is included in a double CD set of Perlman's most famous recordings. I remember the opening scene of 2001 A Space Odyssey where the space ship gently moves across the universe with Katchaturian's Adagio from Gayaneh ballet, which is a lullaby, what a perfect fit and what a real as well as symbolic immortalization of Khatchaturian. This choice of Adagio for "2001" had apparently influenced the selecting of Barber's "Adagio for Strings" to be used for the film "Platoon" later on. Both worked famously to underline the contradictions between vastness and solemnity, between the awe inspiring human achievements and inhumanity of men. That's what good music does.
