ARMENIAN GENOCIDE OFFICIAL RECOGNITION ISSUE SUBMITTED TO US SENATE DISCUSSION

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Application for the official recognition of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey was submitted to discussion of the US Senate the other day. As reported by "Turkish Daily News" newspaper, the suggestion was submitted by senators John Ensin and Jean Corzine in the course of the discussion of the US State department budget for year 2004. The document submitted to discussion appeals to the US to draw the moral from previous genocides to prevent their reiteration in future. Meanwhile, official Ankara continues to pursue its policy of denial of this fact, insisting that the numerous victims among the Armenian population were the result of the efforts of Ottoman Turkey to suppress the Armenians' insubordination. In the Turkish party's opinion, the issue of the Armenian Genocide recognition is being often submitted to discussion, especially in the period of tension in relations between the US and Turkey, which arose when the Turkish parliament refused to provide its territory for the US troops in the war against Iraq. The Turkish political figures are concerned by the fact that in result of tension in American-Turkish relations the US may not support Turkey in regard of some issues such as problem with Cyprus, Turkish membership in EC and the Armenian Genocide recognition.
