I still don't understand why Youri Vardanian, 1980 Olympic champion (under 82.5 kg) who, with a total of 400 kg, beat at that time both world record by 10 kg and Olympic record by 35 kg, is out of World records' lists.

His 400 kg record of 1980 (23 years ago !!!!) is still better than the actual under 85 kg's mediocre 390 kg.

Don't forget that Vardanian beat 43 world records and is recordman of world records in one competition.

Let me say also that when he won the title of under 82.5 kg at the Moscow Olympics, he lifted a total of 400 kg, that was 22.5 kg more than the winner of under 90 kg and 5 kg more than the winner of under 100 kg !!!!!!

He won several world and European championships and was the absolute favorite for the title at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics. Unfortunately, USSR boycotted the Games.

It's really unfair to forget an extraordinary champion like Vardanian who had a personal high jump record of 2.10m (!), isn't it ?

First of all, thank you very much for your e-mail concerning Yuri Vardanian and let us reply herewith.

Yurik Vardanian is one of The Greatest Weightlifters of All Times. There is no doubt about this; this fact has always been recognised by everyone - and it is still recognised today.

We shall never forget his performance on 26th July 1980 in Moscow, at the Olympic Games. He set up incredible world records in snatch (177.5), in jerk (215.5, 222.5) and in total (392.5, 400).

In his category (82.5 kg) he reached the 400-kg dream limit for the first time. Moreover, he further increased this wonderful record on 14th September 1984 in Varna: to 405 kg. Actually, this has remained the world record for ever in the 82.5 kg category, because the bodyweight category limits have changed since.

In the new categories new world records have been established, but those "old" records are not forgotten, either. They are registered in the various weightlifting books, e.g. "Medals and World Records" by Gottfried Schödl.

Weightlifting will never "forget" Yurik Vardanian or any other of its past extraordinary champions. The fact that they do not (yet) figure on the Internet website does not mean neglect.

Even Greek weightlifter Dima (competing in 85 kg category) has a world record of ONLY 390 kg.

Vardanian's 82.5 category world record of 405 kg is and remains for ever better than Dima's one.

Knowing that Dima is 3 kg heavier than our great champion Vardanian who is all muscle built athlete and a real phenomenon.

The strange is that our compatriot is the only Weightlifter in the world who can jump as high as any high jumper. His personal record is 2.10 m !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's a complete athlete and is high gratuated in science (physics, I think).
