For Domino: I am going to assume you know what caches are for. Basically, anytime the processor needs something which is in RAM, there is a big performance penalty since it takes a lot of time to access something from RAM. You have caches to minimize this penalty by keeping frequently accessed things in small high-speed memories that can be accessed quickly.

If the processor asks for something which is not in the cache, then there is a cache-miss and it has to be fetched from memory.

The idea with pre-fetching is to extend this even more ... now the pre-fetching logic will try to figure out (guess) what the processor may need, and try to get it (prefetch it) from RAM, before the processor actually asks for it! For example if you see that the processor is processing something on an array and is requesting sequential blocks from memory, you can prefetch the next block into the cache hoping that the processor will ask for it soon.

Let me know if you want more details.

one issue i have with Dell is that it has only external floppy drives. no internal. and i use floppy a lot.

also

what the difference between XGA and SXGA+ screens? is there a big difference?

also

is it going to make a big difference if i choose 2X128MB memory over 1X256MB?

also

is there a big difference between 12 cell and 8 cell batteries?

also

i can get P4 1.8 GHz on HP. would you recommend?

thanks people

I would say 1x256 is better than 2x128 ... most often these laptops have 2 memory slots ... with 1x256, later on you can add one more to upgrade. With 2x128, most likely there is no more room to upgrade.

Don't worry about the external floppy ... it's a GOOD thing I think. I personally don't use floppies anymore.

But I am still not sure if the floppy has to be external with the DELL. On mine, it's both ... you can have it as external or pop out one of the batteries and repalce it with the floppy.

As far as the batteries, 8 or 12 cel doesn't mean much to me. You want to look at power ratings on those.

Vava, this is the mobile radeon in a laptop ... I am guessing you are referring to the desktop versions?

Harut, the Dell looks a bit better but I will look at the details later tonight. Make sure the Dell has the 10/100 LAN

Congrats harut! Now first thing you do, is go through and uninstall 90% of the crap they put on there ... get rid of ALL the crap. AOL, Compuserve, Netscape, photo whatever, global ad whatever, this and that utility, everything! Just keep the basic windows stuff, drivers, and the main applications you care about.

If there is something that starts up automatically and you don't know how to get rid of it, here are a few places to check:

Startup in your Start Menu

Startup in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

In the Registry under:

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

and also the same things under \HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Isn't it better to use msconfig to disable the programs/services?

Isn't it better to use msconfig to disable the programs/services?

Probably ... but that's just too easy :P Real CS guys like to make their hacks directly into all the scripts, config files, and kernel code ;)

Oh ok. I hope the CS guys don't forget to make a backup copy before making any changes on registry/config files ;)

Also, I think it worths to mention this registry key as well:

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

A lot of bad guys running their software as a service to stay transparent.
