Digicamaddiction

Who else has this illness?

I have to tell you. I carry my camera with me almost all the time.

Some 16-17 years ago while at high-school I worked as a cashier at a local store and saved up all my money put that on top of the money I had saved from allowances and my parents gave me some money and I got a Nikon F1 camera. This was at the time one of the best cameras. Many professionals would use it.

I have used it for over 15 years and the picture quality is unbelievable.

However about a year+ ago I purchased a wonderful 4MP digital camera. I am addicted to this thing. I take shots of everything as it is so easy to manage all the pictures. Since that day, I have NOT even takes a single shot with the Nikon 35mm camera.

I know Sip may have the "digicamaddiction" illness as well, what about others?

My life is split into three major historical parts:

pre-digicam: ancient history which is mostly forgotten.

mid-1.2MP-digicam: Some interesting finds and pictures to be enhanced and decoded by future scholars.

post3.5MP-digicam: Perfectly documented and commited to CDs which have expected shelf-lives of around 100 years. Will soon be transfered to metalic disks using optical technology which would ensure virtually unlimited "shelf-life" ... will for sure last longer than the shelf

digital cameras have really changed how I live and remember my past ... and I am not just saying this cause I'm a geek.

I actually think that in another 5-7 years we will not have the 1 hour photo places in the states. I think majority of people will be using Digital Cameras and those who are still using the 35mm or what have you will either be professionals who never take their film to 1 hour photo or the few home users who will not have the market power to support the 1 hour photo. So only major stores will develop will after that and it will take few days to get the photos.

This is another amazing thing to me. In the year that I have had my camera i have taken over 800 pictures and over 40 small 1-3 minute videos with it. I figure if I was using a 35mm camera I would have gone through about 30(combination of 24 to 36 esp) rolls of film. And probably 10 sets of AA batteries for the flash. Just the film would have been over $100 and the processing would have been another $300. Batteries would have been about $50. That pays for my camera and I have some money left over.

It is obvious to me that analog "film" will disappear very soon. Even if the quality of the original picture cannot be matched by digital (I think digital can get VERY close), the fact that at the end all pictures are going to be stored and viewed digitally, will make the "analog film" obsolete.

I doubt people will go on storing and viewing hard-copy pictures. And the way digital is improving, even now digital photo quality and resolution is MUCH MUCH higher than any human eye can distinguish.

I only want my "Armenian" car air-horn!!! So let's see what we have so far:

1) X-box for Azat

2) Digicam for Harut

3) Digicam for Domino

4) WRX STi for Juggy

5) Six Flags tickets for Nairi

6) Car air-horn for Sip ... if it plays "tata", then I'm sure Hyebruin would also want one for her car (boy, can you imagine her driving on the street with the horn continuously blasting TATA? ... hmmm, on second thought, maybe she shouldn't get one).

I hope "Movses"-papik is reading all this and taking notes

Ya, plus there are great "coffee" shops and interesting streets with red lights. And when you get back home past 1AM fun stuff to watch on TV.

Alright, so while we're all handing out gifts...

I'll take one of those air horns, along with that Mig21 we saw in one of those eBay postings a while back...

Now, if i get what I want, I'd be more than happy to get you ALL what you want... :

BTW - what model digicam do you folks have? I've been using my Canon G1 (i know, i know - there's a newer version now) but I'm ecstatic with mine... The pictures are of excellent quality and the camera functions very much like my old SLR...

But digital will not replace film just yet (not even that spanky old F1 you got Azat - excellent camera BTW) Why? Too slow. Simply too slow for sports/motion/and rambunctious kids...I'll stick to my 35mm for stuff like that;)

I own a Fuji 6800. It is 3.3MP uninterpolated and can take tiff images at 4+Mp interpolated(although I never use that mode - WAY too slow)

Dear Vava, I went to Armenia year and a half ago and took my Nikon with me. There was a group of 4 of us and we each had a camera(everything from a point and click to mine) and I have to say(not that I am a great photographer) but my photos came out so much nicer and cleaner and crisper. The difference was just incredibly. I do love that camera.

Ahhh, the good old all-metal, heavy-as-a-brick, auto-nothing 35mm SLR... brings tears to my eyes (snif). Mechanical genius! They certainly don't make them like they used to... that's why most professional photojournalists (especially covering desert environments and war zones) almost always carry a trusty old manual SLR with them as backup.

Count yourself lucky to have an F1...I wish I had one

I'm not knocking the digital revolution in anyway BTW, just in case people like Seaphan start calling me 'behind the times'

I am waiting for my Sony DCSF707 5 megapixel(sold 505v and bought newer much better version)... I can tell you that if you own Epson 2000P for example and use Epson paper you get a very good results from digital sources. Just make sure you are printing at 300 dpi. I also have 35mmm Canon EOS 100 with Sigma 28-200 lense. I did not touch it since I bought digital camera. Why? Because now photography costs me much less than before.

btw- if you like to see my results of shooting with 505v go to http://photography.15levels.com/

Movses, will you adopt me? I always wanted rich parents.

I have seen the F3 in magazines and it get super ratings. But cameras like Hasselblad and Mamiya and Leica are things that I have dreamed about.

How do you like the Nikon D1X? It is suppose to be one of the best in the market these days.

Rouben, I am doing okay, just okay. Have some work issues to resolve.

Hope things are better for you in Israel than they were in Holland.

BTW, I accidentally found out recently that one of my friends worked with you on the poster campaign last year.(Sophia) It's such a small world.

Oh ya, and my uncle use to know your father well. He is an artist as well and use to teach in the university in Yerevan.
