Temp Files

people, i need help.

a month ago i found out that there are some 2,600 .tmp files in my Windows directory. all of them have size of 0 byte. when opened by Notepad they are empty.

do you guys have any idea what those could be?

some of them are modifed as recent as last week. some as long ago as last summer.

is there any way of finding out what program creates those?

a couple of days ago i moved them to another directory to seen if any program causes an error, or new one are created, but nothings has happened.

i don't know if i should delete them or not.

another intersting fact, they appear to be in pairs. there are excactly two of the same file in the same directory, same file name, same modified date.

here are examples of the names.

ffe8cddf_{6B917520-5BFC-11D7-9F08-444553540001}.tmp

ffe88a87_{6B43E3C0-5A6F-11D7-9F08-444553540001}.tmp

and so forth...

any ideas?

I just delete them all.

I also occasionally delete all IE cache stuff (start->settings->Control Panel->Internet->Delete Files and also Delete cookies)

There are temp directories for each user in "Documents and Settings" subtree and there is also the standard windows temp directory under the windows subtree ... I periodically delete all their content.

Some stuff you can't delete since they are being used ... but that's normal.
