And the Canadianleader took the opportunity to point out Hockey's "great name"."Are you sure he isn't Canadian with a name like that?," he asked MrAbbott. The North Sydney MP hit Twitter to set the record straight."Given my heritage I couldn't get away with claiming to be fromCanada!," he wrote.Mr Hockey's father Richard migrated to Australia from Bethlehem in1948 and anglicised the Armenian family name Hokeidonian. Joe Hockey today delivered his valedictory speechin the House of Representatives, bringing to an end a distinguishedcareer as the Federal member of North Sydney, to which he was firstelected in 1996.Hockey, who began his career as a junior minister in the HowardGovernment, built a strong working relationship with the localcommunity in his electoral including the Armenian-Australian community.He had a very strong working with the Armenian National Committeeof Australia (ANC Australia) and was a leader in advocating Armenianissues in the Australian Federal Parliament.In November 2005, Hockey visited the Republic of Armenia as Ministerfor Human Services and visited the Armenian Genocide Memorial. At thesite he laid a wreath, signed the Museum's Guest Book, and planteda tree in the Memorial Garden.Born to an Armenian father who migrated to Australia, Hockey hasalways been a strong advocate and shown great leadership for Federalrecognition of the Armenian Genocide.Being the Member for North Sydney in an Armenian populated electorate,he has always attended to the needs of the Armenian community andworked closely with ANC Australia on a wide range of issues. He has also been Chair of theAustralia-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group.In the Centenary year of the Armenian Genocide, as Treasurer heled a number of federal parliamentarians in wearing the ArmenianGenocide Centenary Commemorative "Forget Me Not" Pin during QuestionTime. He also released a public statement highlighting Australia'sinvolvement in relief efforts during the Armenian Genocide, and that"Australian media were amongst the first to recognise the ArmenianGenocide occurring in the region at that time."Turkish influence on the Abbott government on the eve of the ANZACCentenary did prevent Hockey from speaking at the Armenian GenocideCentenary commemoration, however this did not prevent him fromattending the event at Sydney Town Hall and releasing the statementabove, unequivocally affirming the historical reality of the ArmenianGenocide.In a tribute in Parliament today, current Treasurer, Scott Morrisoncommented on Hockey's passion for his Armenian heritage and humanrights stating: "As a local member of parliament, Joe has beenan outstanding success... particularly the Armenian community inyour electorate and in the surrounding areas will have lost a greatadvocate in this place, and it's up to the rest of us to show thatsame passion that you have for respecting the Armenian heritage andwhat happened those many years ago, and you standing up for thoseissues in this place, and on behalf of that community, I think youwill forever be remembered."Executive Director of the ANC Australia, Vache Kahramanian remarked:"Today the Australian parliament loses a larger than life characterfrom its chamber.
