MosJan
Unlike many other state-owned companies, plants, enterprises, scientific and cultural institutions which were ruthlessly destroyed, plundered and robbed in the first years of independence, the Writers House, located in one of the most picturesque locations, in Tsakhkadzor and run by the Union of Armenian’s Writers not only managed to overcome those ordeals but has also improved the quality of its services, renovated the building and updated other facilities. Movses Manoukian, director of the House tells the daily Azg that it was awarded the Armenian government prize in 1999 for the high quality of rendered services and goods. This award is now replenished by another one, coming from Canadian QMI organization, which has granted it the international ISO-9002 quality certificate after a month-long examination. The overall number of Armenian entities awarded this certificate is about a dozen and the Writers House is the first one to be awarded for high quality services. The director says this may become a serious incentive for tourism development in Armenia, as foreign companies, while buying goods or services, prefer the ones with ISO certificate. Mr. Manoukian says the tourism sector though has seen some progress in the recent years, it however, is not bigger than the reported progress in other areas of economy. He also complains that tourism development is not well coordinated in different sectors, which leads to inefficient use of financial means. For example, last year several tourism promoting information centers opened one after another, funded on grants from different international organizations. They all are trying to resolve one problem-to provide appropriate information to all people wishing to arrive in Armenia. The government, which deems tourism as a one of the priority directions, should focus efforts on creation of a united information network with which Armenian and foreign travel agencies, restaurants, hotels and other related companies would like to cooperate. There are also many other unresolved problems, such as the order of granting stars to hotels and others. “There is a growing competition among hotel business in Armenia’s most famous resort zone in Tsakhkadzor, which is of course very much encouraging, as it usually results in rise of quality of services,” Mr. Manoukian says.
